Wednesday marked the final rounds at NC State for seniors Stephen Franken and Harrison Rhoades
PALO ALTO, CALIF. – The NC State men's golf team closed its 2018-19 campaign Wednesday with a tie for eighth place at the Stanford NCAA Regional held at the Stanford Golf Course.
The Pack entered the day 11 shots behind the cutline, but a red-hot started featuring four straight birdies to open the third round from senior Stephen Franken and eagles from Benjamin Shipp and Harrison Rhoades on the first hole helped NC State make up the deficit and put itself in contention to advance to the NCAA Championships.
But NC State could not keep its torrid early pace up as after jumping up to fifth place in the field, the Pack had to settle for an eighth place finish.
Regional-host Stanford captured the tournament, winning by 11 shots. Also advancing to the NCAA Championships are Arizona State and North Carolina (tied for second), Georgia Southern (fourth place) and LSU (fifth place).
Junior Benjamin Shipp led the Pack with a three-day score of one-under par to finish in a tie for 12th place. Fellow junior Christian Salzer led the Pack on Wednesday, shooting a one-under par 69 in the third round to finish with a three-round total of six-over par and a tie for 43rd place. Sophomore Easton Paxton fired the best round of the NCAA Regional for the Pack on Tuesday with a four-under par 66 and after shooting a 74 on Wednesday finished the tournament in a tie for 53rd place at eight-over par.
Wednesday marked the final rounds in college for NC State seniors Franken and Rhoades. Franken finished in a tie for 17th place after shooting an even-par 70 in the third round and finishing with a 54-hole score of one-over par. Rhoades closed with his best round of the tournament, shooting a 72 as he finished the tournament in a tie for 63rd place.
Franken leaves NC State as one of the most decorated players in program history. The Raleigh native exits as the program's all-time leader in career stroke average, finishing with a career stroke average of 71.06. He occupies the second (junior year), fourth (senior year) and fifth (sophomore year) spots on the Pack's single-single stroke average in program history.
He is the first player in program history to lead NC State in stroke average for four consecutive seasons.
The 2018 ACC Player of the Year and three-time All-ACC honoree finishes with 22 top-10 finishes and 35 top-20 finishes in his NC State career.
After transferring from Georgetown, Rhoades made an immediate impact for the Pack, appearing in almost every tournament for NC State in his two years with the program. He made the ACC Honor Roll and ACC All-Academic team both years with NC State and was a Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar last season.
