Sophomore Easton Paxton leads NC State in second round with a 66
PALO ALTO, CALIF. – The NC State men's golf team improved on its first round score by 12 shots in the second round on Tuesday to move up three positions on the leaderboard of the Stanford NCAA Regional held at the Stanford Golf Course.
The Pack is in ninth place with one round remaining. The top-five finishing teams in the regional will advance to the NCAA Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. NC State is 11 shots back of fifth place entering the final round.
Sophomore Easton Paxton rebounded from a tough first round to shoot a career-low 66 in the second round. The Riverton, Wyo., native moved up 27 positions on the individual leaderboard on Tuesday as he started his day with birdies on four of the first seven holes he played. He finished the round with six birdies against just two bogeys.
The row of 66 is a career-low round and ties his career-best for score related to par (-4).
Benjamin Shipp leads the Pack on the individual leaderboard in a tie for 16th place. The Duluth, Ga., native shot a 69 in the second round and is one-under par for the tournament.
The highest-placed individual not on one of the five advancing teams will receive a bid into the NCAA Championships. Entering Wednesday's final round, Shipp is only three shots back of the current top-individual that would not be on an advancing team.
Stephen Franken is next for the Pack in a tie for 24th place, two shots back of Shipp. Like Paxton, Franken opened his second round with birdies on four of the first seven holes of the second round. After running into some trouble in the middle of his round that dropped him back to even on the day, Franken rebounded with birdies on two of the final four holes to close the day with a score of 69.
Christian Salzer is in a tie for 58th place with a score of seven-over par through two rounds. Salzer shot a four-over par 74 in the second round.
Harrison Rhoades rounds out the Pack lineup in a tie for 64th place. The Raleigh native improved on his first round score by one shot on Tuesday, shooting a 74.
Regional-host Stanford has a 10 shot lead on the field after shooting a 271 in the second round. Arizona State and North Carolina are tied for second-place, one shot ahead of Georgia Southern for fourth. Ole Miss is currently holding the fifth and final advancing spot, three shots ahead of LSU.
The third and final round starts Wednesday morning at 8:00 a.m. PT (11:00 a.m. ET). NC State's first player will tee off of hole 1 with a 9 am PT (noon ET) start.
