RALEIGH – The NC State softball team (21-18, 3-9 ACC) fell in its series finale with Syracuse (17-20, 6-5 ACC) on Sunday afternoon at Dail Stadium, 5-3.
After the teams split the series-opening doubleheader on Saturday, Syracuse scored a pair of go-ahead runs in the top of the fifth inning on Sunday to take a lead that it would hold on to for the remainder of the game.
OF NOTE:
- Sam Russ continued her current streak by reaching base for the eighth game in a row. The Wolfpack sophomore, who reached base safely 22 games in a row earlier this season for the second-longest streak in program history, got on base in each of her first two at-bats of the outing.
- Russ and Logan Morris each homered in the first inning, marking the fourth time during the 2019 campaign that a pair of Wolfpack batters have hit home runs in the same frame. Russ's home run marked her second of the series and was her second time this week hitting a homer to lead off an inning after she also did so against UNCG on April 3.
- Angie Rizzi tallied her fourth multi-hit game of the season as she led the Wolfpack with a 2-for-3 clip in her appearances at the plate.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Syracuse struck first as leadoff hitter Gabby Teran plated the first run of the outing. Teran hit a single through the left side to start the day and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A ground out advanced her to third, and she came home on a passed ball to put the Orange up 1-0.
- It took just one batter in the bottom of the first for the Pack to tie the score at one as Russ launched a solo homer over the right field wall. It was her second home run of the series and her fifth on the season.
- Two batters later, Morris followed up with another bomb to right field. Her two-out solo shot was her eighth time going yard this season and gave NC State the 2-1 lead.
- The teams went scoreless in the second inning, but Syracuse knotted the score at two in the top of the third. Alicia Hansen singled to left field in her second at-bat of the day and stole second to put herself in scoring position before an RBI single to left field by Alex Acevedo drove her in.
- In the top of the fifth inning, Syracuse loaded the bases with no outs. NC State turned an impressive double play to tag a pair of Orange runners as they attempted to come home, but Syracuse still managed to plate a pair of two-out runs in its half of the inning.
- Acevedo, who reached first on a walk, took a pair of bases during the double play to find herself on third, and a single to left field by Alexis Kaiser scored her to give Syracuse the 3-2 lead. It was the first of two runs scored by the Orange in the fifth inning as Lailoni Mayfield reached first on a fielder's choice, advanced to second on the throw, took third on Kaiser's single and scored on a wild pitch. Syracuse also added an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning.
- NC State scored one final run in the bottom of the sixth. After NC State got runners on first and second, Farricker knocked a base hit up the middle to advance Skylar Johnston from second base to home.
ON DECK:
NC State will be back in action at home on Wednesday for a midweek contest against East Carolina. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m. from Dail Stadium, and the game will be broadcast on the ACC Network Extra.
