Â
RALEIGH, N.C. – All eyes for the 2019 Kay Yow Spring game were on the quarterback competition, as NC State is in the midst of finding out who will replace Ryan Finley.
Â
Matthew McKay went 14-of-24 for 182 yards, Devin Leary was 12-of-23 for 104 yards and Bailey Hockman was also 12-of-23 for 135 yards. All three had a TD pass.
Â
All three QBS led a first-half scoring drive, Leary and McKay a pair each. The first half saw five scoring drives, four resulting in TDs.
Â
The Pack was without the services of all five projected offensive line starters: tackles Tyrone Riley and Justin Witt, guards Joshua Fedd-Jackson and Joe Sculthorpe and center Grant Gibson all sat out the game.
Â
The game's first explosive came when Leary found WR C.J. Riley down the sideline for a 35-yard hookup. A few plays later, Leary connected with WR Thayer Thomas for a 3-yard TD pass.
Â
The drive was Leary's first with the first-team unit as he had a previous drive as the QB for the second-team.
Â
PK Christopher Dunn kicked a 53-yard field goal in the second quarter.
Â
Riley's second big catch of the day set up the Pack's second TD. Riley caught a 40-yard pass from McKay, then a few plays later McKay kept the ball and rushed for a TD from seven yards out.
Â
RB Bam Knight sprinted away from the defense for a 73-yard TD run, and McKay found TE Cary Angeline from 14 yards out right before the half.
Â
RB Trent Pennix punched it in from one-yard out to open the second half scoring, which had a running clock.
Â
Hockman slung a TD pass in the third quarter, 61 yards to WR Max Fisher.
Â
PK Trenton Gill kicked a 45-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. RB Will Dabbs concluded the scoring with a 12-yard TD dash.
Â
Knight led all rushers with 139 yards while Riley led the receivers with 113 yards.
