Freshman Trent Hidlay Claims Top Honors at UWW Junior Nationals

Redshirting freshman wins 86 kg weight class, claims spot at World Team Trials
RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State freshman Trent Hidlay claimed top honors at 86 kg at the UWW Junior Freestyles this weekend in Las Vegas. Hidlay redshirted this past season at NC State, going 24-2 and winning five tournaments while splitting time between 174 and 184 pounds.

Starting as the #3 seed, Hidlay advanced to the quarterfinals with a 9-2 win followed by a 7-0 win.

In the quarterfinals he downed Abe Assad (8-0), an Iowa commit and ranked #4 nationally at 182 pounds by InterMat. In the semifinals, Hidlay took out the second seeded Gavin Hoffman of Ohio State, a former top-12 recruit who also redshirted this season, 8-1.

In the finals, Hidlay scored a 10-3 win over Zachary Braunagel from Illinois.

Hidlay went 5-0 in winning the tournament, outscoring his foes 42-6. With the win, Hidlay advances to the Junior World Team Trials which will be hosted by NC State in Reynolds Coliseum in May.

Fellow redshirting freshman Jarrett Trombley claimed sixth place honors at 61 kg, and has also qualified for the World Team Trials in May. Trombley advanced to the semifinals, thanks to a pin over the #2 seed Jordan Decatur, the top ranked 132-pound wrestler in the nation by InterMat and Ohio State commit.

The Wolfpack Wrestling Club also had five of its athletes advance to the World Team Trials with top-seven finishes on the Senior level.

Tommy Gantt advanced to the finals at 74 kg, but fell to former two-time national champion Isaiah Martinez 6-4.

Michael Macchiavello took third at 92 kg, while Timmy McCall was seventh. Former Wolfpack wrestlers Lee Davis (79 kg) and Michael Boykin (97 kg) both were sixth in their weight classes.
