Wolfpack Falls to Iowa in NCAA Tournament Sweet 16

Seniors DD Rogers and Kiara Leslie combine for 28 points and 15 rebounds in loss to Hawkeyes

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The 10th-ranked and third-seeded NC State women's basketball team (28-6) fell in the Sweet 16 round of the 2019 NCAA Tournament to eighth-ranked and third-seeded Iowa (29-6) on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 79-61 inside the Greensboro Coliseum.
Led by espnW National Player of the Year Megan Gustafson, the Hawkeyes got off to a strong start and took a 16-11 lead through 10 minutes of play. Iowa extended this advantage to 37-24 at the halftime break before NC State made a big run of its own. During the first 5:17 of the third quarter, NC State used a 14-6 run to pull within five points (43-38).
Iowa found another quick burst of scoring with a 7-2 run to extend its lead back out to double digits (50-40) with 2:55 remaining in the third quarter. NC State fought hard but was not able to shrink the deficit below 10 for the rest of the game.
Senior guard Kiara Leslie led the way for NC State, scoring a team-high 16 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. She was joined in double figures by Elissa Cunane (14 points and 11 rebounds), DD Rogers (12 points), and Aislinn Konig (10 points). Konig went 2-of-4 from three-point range to set a new NC State single-season program record with 93 made three-pointers. Entering the game, she was tied atop the list with the 91 three-pointers she made during the 2017-18 season.

With her 14 points Saturday, Cunane concludes her rookie campaign with 464 points. This ranks as the second highest scoring total by a freshman in NC State's history. Chasity Melvin holds the record of 508 set during the 1994-95 season.
Iowa's Gustafson led all players with 27 points and 12 rebounds. She was joined in double figures by teammates Hannah Stewart (16 points and 11 rebounds) and Tania Davis. The Hawkeyes entered the game as the most accurate shooting team in the nation and went 31-of-57 (.544) from the field in the victory.
NC State was limited to 24-of-69 (.348) and a 4-of-18 (.222) success rate from distance. The Wolfpack earned a 37-36 rebounding edge on Saturday.
With the loss, NC State concludes a terrific 2018-19 season that featured the best start in program history (21-0), the longest winning streak in program history (21 games), a second straight trip to the Sweet 16, and a third consecutive top-four finish in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
