RALEIGH – The NC State softball team (3-4) opened its home schedule on Friday afternoon at Dail Stadium in the ACC/B1G Challenge, dropping its games with Nebraska (4-2) and Wisconsin (6-1).
The Cornhuskers managed to build a 6-0 lead through the first four innings, and despite a late pair of runs for the Pack in the sixth, a home run in the seventh sealed Nebraska's 7-2 win.
The Wolfpack held a close contest with the Badgers in game two. The contest was tied at one heading into the bottom of the third, and Wisconsin scored a pair of runs to take a 3-1 lead. The score held as neither team was able to plate a run the final four innings.
Of Note (Game One)
-Sam Russ led the team at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance, while Brigette Nordberg, Randi Farricker and Skylar Johnston each tallied a hit.
-Sydney Nester (2-2) was credited with the loss as she threw the first three innings and allowed six earned runs to score. Kama Woodall relieved her in the fourth and gave up a run in the seventh.
How It Happened (Game One)
-The Huskers got on the board first with a two-out home run to left field in the first inning.
-Nebraska tacked on another run in the second thanks to Rylie Unzicker's single to right field. Unzicker scored Bri Cassidy after she lead off with a single to second and advanced to second on a walk.
-A three-run home run by Lindsey Walljasper in the third gave the Huskers a 5-0 lead. A pair of base hits and error allowed runners to get in scoring position.
-With the bases loaded and one out in the fourth, Tristen Edwards' groundout to the pitcher's circle plated a sixth run.
-The Wolfpack avoided the shutout with a pair of runs in the sixth. After Johnston's leadoff single up the middle and Nordberg's two-out single through the left side, a fielding error on a pop up allowed Johnston to score the first run. With the bases re-loaded thanks to April Visser's hit-by-pitch, Angie Rizzi drew a walk to bring Nordberg across.
-Edwards belted a leadoff homer in the seventh to ultimately give Nebraska the 7-2 victory.
Of Note (Game Two)
-Johnston went two-for-two with a pair of leadoff hits, while Russ and Logan Morris also had a hit in the game.
-Devin Wallace (1-1) threw her second complete game of the season, allowing two earned runs on four hits while fanning five batters.
How It Happened (Game Two)
-Wisconsin brought the first run of the game across in the second inning. Kelly Welsh hit a one-out double to center field after a dropped foul ball to start the threat, and then a sacrifice fly to right field brought her home.
-The Wolfpack responded in the third, as Skylar Johnston knotted the game on a 4-6 fielder's choice at second base. She led off the inning with an infield single, and a wild pitch followed by Russ's single through the left side allowed her to threaten.
-In the bottom of the frame, the Badgers added a pair of runs. Ally Miklesh and Kayla Konwent managed to get on base with a leadoff walk and one-out single to the shortstop, and a double steal moved them to second and third. Miklesh beat the tag on a fielder's choice bunt in front of the plate, and a wild pitched scored Konwent.
