RALEIGH, N.C. – The 21st-ranked NC State men's tennis team (6-2) is set for more home action at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center as it hosts Old Dominion on Sunday at 1 p.m.
MATCH PROMOTIONS:
Admission to all home matches is free. Fans who attend Sunday's match will receive free pizza (while supplies last) and can enter to win an NC State prize pack.
LAST TIME OUT:
The Pack hosted a doubleheader last weekend, splitting its Saturday matches with North Carolina A&T and South Carolina. NC State cruised past the Aggies, taking the doubles point in dominant fashion and winning all five of the outing's singles matches in straight sets to complete the 7-0 sweep.
PACK IN THE POLLS:
The Pack is currently ranked in the top 25 of both major polls as it checks in at No. 21 in the Oracle/ITA Division I Men's Rankings and No. 25 in the Tennis Channel/USTA College Tennis poll.
Alexis Galarneau earned a spot in the top 50 of the singles rankings at No. 45.
The next set of team, singles and doubles rankings will be released on Feb. 19 after the conclusion of the ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championship.
GALARNEAU'S JUNIOR CAMPAIGN:
After spending the fall semester playing in tournaments on the ATP circuit, Galarneau returned to dual play in his usual strong form. He won his first five completed singles matches of the season, including a win over Georgia's No. 15 Emil Reinberg at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The victory over Reinberg marked the highest-ranked singles win of Galarneau's career.
The Laval, Canada native has dropped just one singles match this season, a tight 6-4, 7-5 decision that 16th-ranked Paul Jubb won.
Galarneau is also unbeaten in doubles competition on the 2019 season as he's posted a perfect 5-0 record in his completed matches. He and Michael Ogden tallied a win against a ranked opponent during ITA Kick-Off Weekend, cruising past No. 51 Robert Loeb and Jan Zielinski 6-2 on the top court to help the Pack clinch the doubles point.
MILESTONES APPROACHING:
Georgiy Malyshev and Ivan Saveljic are approaching 50 career singles wins, as they head into Sunday's match each having won 48 singles matches during their time competing at NC State.
SCOUTING THE MONARCHS:
Sunday's match marks the fourth year in a row that NC State and Old Dominion will meet during regular season action, and it will be the teams' first time playing in Raleigh since 2016. The Pack won the most recent matchup between the squads, taking a 4-3 decision over the Monarchs last season.
The Monarchs enter the match with a 4-2 record after most recently defeating ETSU by a 4-3 score. Old Dominion is led by head coach Dominik Mueller, who was named Conference USA Coach of the Year for the 2017-18 season after leading the Monarchs to a berth at the NCAA Tournament and to their first conference title since 1994.
Aziz Kijametovic is the only ranked singles player for Old Dominion. The defending Conference USA Player of the Year checked in at No. 93 in the latest rankings. Kijametovic and doubles partner Francois Musitelli are ranked No. 25 in doubles after reaching the semifinals of the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in November.
UP NEXT:
The Wolfpack will continue its nine-match home stint next weekend with a packed slate of opponents. NC State will welcome a ranked team to Raleigh for the first time this season as it hosts No. 17 Tennessee on Friday, Feb. 22 and will turn around to host a doubleheader against Virginia Tech and North Carolina Central on Sunday, Feb. 24.
