
Wolfpack Surges Past Syracuse, 73-58

Braxton Beverly led the Pack with 21 points
RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State men's basketball team shot 63.6 percent from the field in the second half on the way to defeating visiting Syracuse, 73-58, Wednesday night inside PNC Arena.
With the win, the Pack improves to 18-7 (6-6 ACC), while the Orange falls to 17-8 (8-4 ACC).
Braxton Beverly shot 4-of-8 from behind the arc to tie his career high with 21 points to lead the Pack in scoring. Torin Dorn posted his fifth double-double of the season and third in conference play with 16 points and a season-high 12 rebounds. DJ Funderburk's 12 points rounded out double-digit scoring for the Pack.
The 15-point victory margin is the most by the Wolfpack against an ACC opponent this season. NC State shot 14-22 (.636) in the final 20 minutes of action as it posted its best second-half shooting percentage in conference play this season.
The Pack also took care of business on the defensive side of the ball, holding the Orange to just 35 percent shooting. Syracuse's 58 points marked the first time NC State has held an ACC opponent to under 60 points in a victory since the team's 76-58 win over Notre Dame on Feb. 3, 2018.
NC State assisted on 19 of its 24 made field goals, the 14th time this season that it has assisted on at least half of its converted shots.
NC State held Syracuse scoreless for just over four minutes in the beginning of the second half while adding 14 points of its own in that same span. Beverly rattled off nine off the Pack's first 13 points in the second half to help extend the Pack's lead.
A jumper by Torin Dorn would put the Pack ahead 45-34, and NC State held a double-digit lead for the final 16:08 of the outing.
NC State led for the final 30:20 of the matchup. The Pack went on a 10-2 run that spanned three minutes of the middle of the first half to open up a 12-point lead (28-16), as the Orange missed five consecutive shots from the floor in that span.
NC State struggled to knock down a shot from the field over the final 4:40 of the first half while Syracuse took advantage of an 11-0 run that brought it back within one. A pair of free throws by Beverly put the halftime score at 30-27 in favor of the Wolfpack.
Frank Howard shot 8-of-16 (5-of-11 from three-point range) to lead Syracuse with 21 points.
NC State returns to action as it faces second-ranked Duke on Saturday, Feb. 16. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. from Cameron Indoor Stadium, and the game will be televised on ESPN.
