
Pack Splits With Top 10 Opponents On Final Day Of USF Opening Weekend Invitational

TAMPA, Fla. – The NC State softball team closed out competition on Sunday at the USF Opening Weekend Invitational in Tampa, Fla., splitting with No. 7 Arizona (3-2) and No. 5 Florida (4-0). The Wolfpack defeated the Wildcats, 4-1, in game one, and went toe-to-toe with the Gators right until the final play in game two but ultimately fell, 2-1, at the USF Softball Stadium.
Of Note (Game One)
-The upset over Arizona was the first win against a ranked opponent since Feb. 16, 2018, when the Pack defeated No. 22 Ohio State, 5-4, in eight innings.
-NC State's last win against a top 10 team was when the Pack defeated eighth-ranked Florida State, 9-4, on April 4, 2015.
-It was the first win against a nonconference top 10 opponent since May 17, 2014, when NC State topped No. 7 Georgia, 5-4.
-Sydney Nester (2-0) picked up the win in the circle. She threw a complete game, giving up seven hits and an earned run while striking out five batters.
-Angie Rizzi went 2-for-2, hitting her first career home run, while Logan Morris, Brigette Nordberg and Randi Farricker each tallied a hit.
How It Happened (Game One)
-Alyssa Palomino led off the contest with a home run to right field to put the Wildcats on the board first. After three hits loaded the bases with one out in the frame, Nester was able to limit the damage with a swinging strikeout and fly out to shallow center field.
-In the second inning Arizona managed to load the bases again with just one out, but Nester started the 1-2-3 double play to end the side.
-Rizzi knotted the contest at one in the second with a home run to right field.
-Nordberg allowed the Pack to take its first lead of the game in the fourth with a leadoff home run to right field.
-The Pack doubled its lead in the sixth. Logan Morris led off with a home run to center field, and then after Farricker hit a two-out single to left field, Rizzi's single through the right gap and a wild pitch allowed pinch runner Chandley Garner to score.
Of Note (Game Two)
-Nordberg, Farricker and Natalie Jones each went 1-for-3, and all were extra-base hits.
-NC State has hit at least one home run through each of its five games this season. The squad hit eight this weekend.
-Sydney Nester (2-1) was credited with the loss after relieving starter Devin Wallace in the fifth and giving up the game-winning run. Wallace threw the first four innings, not allowing an earned run while striking out a pair of batters.

-Florida plated a run in the first inning, as Danielle Romanello singled up the middle to bring Hannah Adams home after her leadoff single and a fielder's choice put her in scoring position.
-Natalie Jones knotted the game in the fifth with a solo shot to right center.
-With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the seventh, Jordan Matthews hit a walk off sacrifice fly to right field to give the Gators the win.
On Deck
NC State will open its home schedule Friday when it hosts Nebraska at 4 p.m. in the ACC/B1G Challenge at Dail Stadium. The tournament will run Friday through Sunday, as the Pack will face the Huskers and Wisconsin twice apiece. All of NC State's home games will be broadcast on the ACC Network Extra.
