GREENSBORO, N.C. – NC State women's cross country swept another pair of yearly awards for the 2019 campaign, as the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) announced its season honorees on Tuesday morning.
Wolfpack senior Elly Henes was named ACC Women's Cross Country Performer of the Year, and head coach Laurie Henes was honored as ACC Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year. It marks the second set of 2019 honors for the mother-daughter duo after they were named NCAA Southeast Region Women's Coach of the Year and Athlete of the Year in mid-November.
Elly Henes became the first ACC Performer of the Year for the Wolfpack women since the honor was established in 2012. She wrapped up a decorated cross country career with a personal-best national result, a 10th-place finish in 20:20.7. The result earned her status as an All-American for the third season in a row and made her just the fifth woman in NC State women's cross country history to become an All-American three or more times.
The Cary, N.C., native also won gold at the 2019 ACC Championships (20:37.4) and the 2019 NCAA Southeast Regional (19:48.9). Elly was the first Wolfpack woman to win both of those titles since Laura Hoer did so in 2010.
Elly's victory at the ACC Championships made her the third member of the Henes family to win an individual cross country conference title in Wolfpack uniform. Her father, Bob Henes, was a three-time ACC cross country champion at NC State as he picked up victories in 1987, 1989 and 1990. Her mother, then Laurie Gomez, was the individual ACC cross country titlist in 1991. All three are also multi-time cross country All-Americans at NC State.
Laurie Henes was named Coach of the Year for the fourth season in a row and the fifth time in her 14-year head coaching career at NC State. She led the Wolfpack women to their fourth consecutive conference and regional titles in 2019.
Coach Henes' squad went on to claim a fifth-place finish at the 2019 NCAA Championships, the program's third top-five finish in the last five seasons. It was the team's best national result since 2016. Coach Henes coached Elly and freshman Kelsey Chmiel (22nd place, 20:32.5) to top-25 finishes at the national meet, marking the first time since 2016 that multiple Wolfpack women became All-Americans in the same season.
