Three from NC State honored as All-Americans
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Wolfpack cross country squads wrapped up their 2019 campaigns with solid showings in the midst of rainy conditions at the NCAA Championships on Saturday.
NC State's women secured a top-five finish for the third time in five seasons, placing fifth as a team with 190 points. The Pack men finished 26th in their fifth-straight appearance at the national meet.
WOLFPACK ALL-AMERICANS:
Three members of the Pack were honored as All-Americans for the 2019 season after securing top-40 individual finishes in their respective races.
Elly Henes and Kelsey Chmiel garnered the honors on the women's side, marking the first time since the 2016 season that multiple members of the team became All-Americans in the same season.
Henes' designation was her third in a row in cross country, making her the first female runner since Connie Jo Robinson (1982-84) to become an All-American in three consecutive years. She joined an elite group, as Henes is just the fifth woman in NC State history to garner All-America honors in cross country three or more times in her career.
Chmiel earned the highest finish by a Wolfpack freshman since 2010 when Laura Hoer placed 21st overall to take home All-America honors in her rookie season.
On the men's side, Ian Shanklin gained All-America status for the first time in his cross country career. His honors were the first for NC State's men since the 2013 season.
WOMEN'S 6K RECAP:
The Wolfpack women earned their highest national finish since 2016, which also marked the last time that the NCAA Championships meet was held in Terre Haute.
Henes led the way for NC State with the best national result of her career. The senior wrapped up a decorated collegiate cross country campaign by taking 10th overall in 20:20.7.
Chmiel's 20:32.5 mark was the second-fastest posted by a freshman in the women's 6K and the fastest time clocked by an American rookie. She crossed the finish line in 22nd place.
Dominique Clairmonte (54th, 20:59.1) made her return to the lineup for the final meet of the season, and Mariah Howlett (68th, 21:02.9) and Savannah Shaw (102nd, 21:16.7) rounded out the Pack's scoring in the 6K.
Nevada Mareno (131st, 21:28.3) and Julia Zachgo (209th, 22:09.0) also saw action at the NCAA Championships.
MEN'S 10K RECAP:
After battling through adversity all season, NC State's men wrapped up the year by finishing just outside of the top 25 teams at the NCAA Championships.
Shanklin was the top individual for the Pack on the men's side, with his 31:19.2 good for 39th overall. Gavin Gaynor joined him among the top 100 runners, placing 60th in 31:34.7.
