NEW ORLEANS – NC State women's cross country coach Laurie Henes and Wolfpack senior Elly Henes both earned regional awards for the 2019 season, as the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced its honorees on Tuesday afternoon.
Laurie Henes was named NCAA Southeast Region Women's Coach of the Year, while Elly Henes was honored as NCAA Southeast Region Women's Athlete of the Year.
The regional honors were the first of Elly's cross country career. Coach Henes has been honored as Regional Coach of the Year five times after also winning the award in 2007, 2016, 2017 and 2018.
Elly continued to build on her impressive list of 2019 accomplishments as she took home the individual regional title in the women's 6K on Friday. The senior led the field with a time of 19:48.9 to secure the regional crown after claiming an individual ACC title just two weeks prior.
After finishing as the runner-up at both the regional and conference meets in 2018, Elly became the first Wolfpack woman to win both of those gold medals since Laura Hoer did so in 2010.
Coach Henes led the Wolfpack women to their fourth-straight title at last week's NCAA Southeast Regional. With the victory at the meet, Coach Henes' squad automatically earned its 33rd NCAA Championships berth. That number is more than any other Division I program in the nation.
All seven of the team's runners finished in the top 30 in a field of over 250 runners, with three of those women placing in the individual top 10. Six from NC State turned in performances that earned them All-Region honors, making the program one of 11 across the nation that had six or more runners finish inside the top 25 of their respective regional races.
NC State will conclude its 2019 campaign at the NCAA Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Nov. 23. The national meet will be held at the Lavern Gibson Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind.
