Ian Shanklin (7th), Elly Henes (9th) secure top-10 individual finishes for the Wolfpack men and women
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The NC State men's and women's cross country programs stood strong against a deep field of nationally-ranked teams, as both Wolfpack squads came away from the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational with top-four team finishes.
NC State's men placed third as a team with 177 points, and the women tallied a fourth-place team finish with 139 total points.
Both programs managed to secure a pair of upsets in each of their respective races. The Pack men upset ACC foe and ninth-ranked Notre Dame, as well as No. 10 Wisconsin. On the women's side, the Wolfpack finished higher than both No. 2 New Mexico and No. 6 Washington.
MEN'S BLUE 5-MILE RECAP:
Ian Shanklin made his 2019 season debut in impressive fashion. The junior led the way for NC State's men with a seventh-place individual finish, crossing the finish line in 23:29.64.
JP Flavin also made his first appearance of the season, and his first cross country start in Wolfpack uniform, with a 27th-place finish in 23:58.84. The mark lowered his personal best, which he set at this meet last season, by nearly 40 seconds.
Joe Bistritz was next to finish for the Pack. His 24:07.71 was also good for a PR and 38th place. Hannes Burger (43rd, 24:11.68) ran his first race as a member of the NC State roster, and Gavin Gaynor (62nd, 24:18.67) rounded out the Wolfpack's top five.
The meet also marked the NC State cross country debut for Nate Kawalec (25:00.50), and Yared Mekonnen (25:17.40) and Ares Epps (25:41.03) also represented NC State in the Blue division race.
WOMEN'S BLUE 5K RECAP:
NC State's top two runners on the women's side remained the same from the adidas XC Challenge.
Senior Elly Henes lowered her 5K personal best to 16:29.27, beating the time that she recorded at this meet two seasons ago. The mark was good for ninth overall.
Kelsey Chmiel followed by dropping a best time of her own. The true freshman clocked in at 16:36.91 for 15th overall.
Dominique Clairmonte (29th, 16:53.62), Julia Zachgo (42nd, 17:00.77) and Sam Bush (44th, 17:07.09) rounded out the scoring for the Wolfpack women. Zachgo's time was a personal best in the 5K, and the race marked the first in NC State uniform for Bush.
Savannah Shaw (61st, 17:11.14), Mariah Howlett (76th, 17:23.98) and Rafaella Gibbons (82nd, 17:26.27) also were in action for NC State in a strong field of runners in the Blue race.
OPEN RACES RECAP:
The Wolfpack fielded three in the women's open 5K, and Tim Bason represented the Pack men in the open five-mile.
All three of NC State's women finished in the top five, each posting the best 5K times of their Wolfpack careers. Isabel Zimmermann led the way, placing second in 17:18.24. She was followed shortly by Heather Holt (third, 17:21.48) and Anna Vess (fifth, 17:26.54).
Bason, whose five-mile PR was set at the Notre Dame Invitational in 2017, bettered that mark in Friday's race. His 25:06.52 time was good for 17th in that field.
UP NEXT:
The Wolfpack will head two ways for its final weekend of regular-season competition as it sends athletes to the ECU Pirate Invitational and the Nuttycombe Invitational on Friday, Oct. 18.
