Wolfpack Women Take Third at Nuttycombe Invitational

MADISON, Wis. – The NC State women's cross country team once again stood strong against a deep field of nationally-ranked squads as it powered its way to a third-place finish at the Nuttycombe Invitational Friday afternoon.
The ninth-ranked Wolfpack finished third overall for the third time in the last four seasons, totaling 203 points from its scorers at Wisconsin. Top-ranked Arkansas and No. 4 Stanford finished first and second, respectively, in a field that featured 20 ranked teams.
NC State secured a better finish than two teams that entered the meet ranked higher than it in the national standings – No. 4 New Mexico and No. 6 Utah.
WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP 6K RECAP:
The Wolfpack women moved up eight places over the final two-thirds of the race to secure another impressive team finish. Through the first 2,000 meters of the race, NC State sat in 11th place as a team with just two runners among the top 50. By the end of the 6,000-meter race, the Pack saw four of its five scorers finish in the top 50 as individuals, with the team as a whole checking in at third.
For the third time in as many meets this season, Elly Henes crossed the finish line as the Wolfpack's top scorer. The senior checked in at 20:13.7 to place 14th.
Julia Zachgo ran the fastest 6K time of her career, besting the time that she clocked at least season's Nuttycombe Invitational by almost a minute. Her 20:34.7 mark was good for 32nd.
Kelsey Chmiel (34th, 20:35.6) and Dominique Clairmonte (50th, 20:46.6) also secured top-50 individual finishes, and Sam Bush (73rd, 21:05.9) rounded out the scoring for the Wolfpack women.
Savannah Shaw (82nd, 21:10.8) and Isabel Zimmermann (111th, 21:22.4) also represented NC State in the women's championship 6K.
WOMEN'S OPEN 6K RECAP:
NC State's women all secured top-17 finishes in a field of over 100 runners who competed in the open 6K.
Mariah Howlett led the way as the top finishes for the women in her first collegiate 6K in a Wolfpack uniform. The redshirt freshman maintained a spot among the top group of runners for the entirety of the race, ultimately crossing the finish line third in 20:52.2.
Anna Vess (13th, 21:31.7) and Rafaella Gibbons (17th, 21:39.9) continued to find success at the Nuttycombe Invitational after both clocking their 6K personal bests at this meet last season.
MEN'S 8K RECAP:
Three Pack men crossed the finish line in the men's 8K to cap off NC State's afternoon in Wisconsin. Gavin Gaynor (68th, 24:25.6) led the way with a solid performance. Tim Bason (139th, 24:52.3) set a new 8K personal best Friday afternoon. Racing in the first higher-caliber meet of his Wolfpack career, Nate Kawalec (151st, 24:57.2) rounded out the finishers for NC State.

NC State will begin postseason action at the 2019 ACC Cross Country Championships on Friday, Nov. 1. The conference meet will be hosted by Virginia Tech at the Buford Meredith Cross Country Course in Blacksburg, Va.
