HOUSTON, Tx. – Former NC State baseball player Trea Turner and the Washington Nationals are World Series champions. It is the first championship in 95 years for the city of Washington, as it defeated the Houston Astros, 3-2, in a seven-game series (last was the Senators in 1924).
Washington won the first two games, 5-4 and 12-3, in Houston on Oct. 22-23, but suffered three consecutive losses Oct. 25-27 at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. The Nationals earned a 7-2 come-from-behind win on Tuesday to force a game seven, then battled back from a 2-0 deficit to take the finale, 6-2, on Wednesday.
He is the eighth former Wolfpack player to compete in the Fall Classic, and the fifth to win a World Series. Turner is the first since Tracy Woodson and the 1988 Los Angeles Dodgers.
In the postseason, Turner tallied 17 hits, including a home run and four doubles, batted in three runs and scored 10 of his own.
