PACK IN THE POLLS:
Both NC State squads found themselves ranked in the national top four to start the season, as the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) released its preseason poll on Oct. 9. The Pack men began the year at No. 3 overall as the highest-ranked ACC squad, and the Wolfpack women checked in at No. 4 in the nation.
The CSCAA released its first poll of the regular season following the first few weeks of competition for some of the nation's squads. In that most current edition of the rankings, NC State's men remain at No. 3, and the Wolfpack women rank No. 7.
2018-19 REWIND:
The Wolfpack enjoyed successful 2018-19 campaigns by both its men and its women, capped off by both teams matching program-best finishes at the 2019 NCAA Championships.
NC State's men ended the season with their fourth-consecutive fourth-place finish at the national meet. Andreas Vazaios repeated as a national titlist in the 200-yard butterfly, making it four seasons in a row that the Pack men have won a national title in at least one event. During the regular season, NC State went unbeaten in head-to-head matchups with other programs. The team then went on to claim its fifth-straight and 29th-overall conference title at the 2019 ACC Championships.
The Wolfpack women enjoyed one of the most successful seasons in program history in 2018-19. NC State finished as the No. 7 team at the NCAA Championships and won its second conference championship in three years at the 2019 ACC Championships. The team finished with a total of 11 event titles at the league meet, setting the program record for the most single-season conference titles.
THE PACK IS BACK:
NC State will look to continue off of its recent successes, led by a solid group of returners on its 2019-20 squad. Overall, 15 of the Wolfpack's returners gained All-America status in 2018-19 – eight women and five men.
The Wolfpack women graduated just one point from the 2019 NCAA Championships team that placed seventh. Three double-digit scorers from that meet will be back on the 2019-20 roster as Sophie Hansson (32 points), Ky-lee Perry (24 points) and Kylee Alons (15.5 points) all return to the squad.
Hansson is the nation's fastest returner in the 100-yard breaststroke (57.74), and her 200-yard breaststroke time (2:06.18) also ranks high among returners at No. 2 nationally. Both of those marks sit atop the ACC coming into 2019-20.
Coleman Stewart is set for his senior campaign after leading the Pack men in scoring (49 points) at last years NCAA Championships. He is the nation's top returner in both the 100-yard backstroke (43.98) and the 100-yard butterfly (44.46), two events in which he earned top two national finishes in 2018-19.
Stewart (100-yard and 200-yard backstroke) and Eric Knowles (500-yard freestyle) will both look to defend their individual ACC titles in 2020. On the women's side, NC State won eight non-relay events at the 2019 ACC Championships. Six of those eight gold medals were won by women who return to the 2019-20 roster – Julia Poole (200-yard individual medley), Kate Moore (400-yard individual medley), Hansson (100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke), Madeline Kline (platform) and Emma Muzzy (200-yard backstroke).
Perry and sophomore Nyls Korstanje lead NC State's sprint corps with the best returning times in the conference in both the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle events. Alons joins Perry with a 50-yard freestyle time that ranks in the top 10 among swimmers who return to the pool this season. It makes the Wolfpack the only team in the nation with multiple returners in that category and the only team in the nation with multiple returning A finalists in the women's 50 freestyle.
NC State's women's squad is also stacked with 400-yard individual medley returners. Moore (4:05.24), Muzzy (4:05.60) and Makayla Sargent (4:05.81) enter the season ranked in the top 10 nationally and the top three in the conference with last season's times.
In addition to its strong group of returners, NC State has made solid additions to both of its rosters with some of the nation's top incoming talent.
SCOUTING THE GAMECOCKS:
NC State and South Carolina face off for the second season in a row after last meeting at the start of the 2018-19 campaign. Before that matchup, the programs had not competed head-to-head against one another since 2006.
Last season, the Wolfpack swept the Gamecocks in Columbia. The Pack men outscored South Carolina 198.5-99.5 and won 11 events. The Wolfpack women took the 197-101 victory over South Carolina, winning 12 events.
South Carolina's men and women both finished ninth at the 2019 SEC Championships. The squads followed up with 27th-place and 21st-place finishes, respectively, at the NCAA Championships.
