
Shipp Pacing the Field after One Round of Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate

JONESBOROUGH, TENN. - NC State men's golf senior Benjamin Shipp shot a seven-under par 65 on Friday to take the lead of the 87-player field at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate held at the Blackthorn Club at the Ridges.Â

Shipp made the turn on Friday at one-under par through nine holes, but exploded on the back nine with six birdies to shoot a six-under par 30 and sit at seven-under par after 18 holes.

The Duluth, Ga., native birdied the 10th hole, had a par on number 11 and then made four consecutive birdies on holes 12 through 15. After two pars on 16 and 17, Shipp birdied 18, his seventh birdie of the round, to stand at 65.

Shipp leads Louisville's John Murphy and UNCW's Segundo Oliva Pinto by one shot.Â

Freshman Max Steinlechner is in a tie for 10th place on the individual leaderboard after a bogey-free day. The Austria native made three birdies and shot a three-under par 69 in the first round.

Also shooting under par was senior Christian Salzer. Salzer, who has shot the low score in the first three tournaments of the fall for NC State, shot a one-under par 71 on Friday and is in a tie for 28th place.

Graduate student Brett McLamb is next for the Pack in a tie for 60th place after shooting a three-over par 75.Â

Carter Graf rounds out the NC State lineup in a tie for 68th place at four-over par, one shot back of McLamb.

Playing as an individual, freshman Spencer Oxendine shot an even-par 72 on Friday to sit in a tie for 39th place.Â

Facing a staunch field, the NC State men's golf team is currently in a tie with UNCW for fourth place at eight-under par. Tennessee leads the field at 15-under par, seven shots ahead of NC State. Louisville is in second place, one shot back of the Volunteers and Furman is in third place, three shots back of the Cardinals.

The Pack will begin the second round Saturday morning at 9:15 a.m.
