ATHENS, Ga. – NC State's divers made their return to the boards and opened the 2019 calendar year with a solid outing on the first day of action at the Georgia Diving Invitational, led by a pair of top-seven finishes by James Brady and Holt Gray on the one-meter board.
QUOTING THE COACH:
Head diving coach Yahya Radman
"Today was a competition day for the men on the one-meter and a learning day for the women on the three-meter. I was really pleased with how the women came into the meet with a very different attitude than they've had in the past, which will serve us well moving forward. Madeline (Kline) had a couple of new dives that we needed to get off in competition, and I think she did them admirably. The men were definitely a highlight as they battled in a very intense competition with some of the best divers in the country. Overall, I'm very proud of how this team performed today and look forward to the next two days."
After finishing among the top 12 divers during the morning's one-meter prelims, Brady and Gray advanced to the finals session where they matched up against a competitive field that included multiple 2018 NCAA finalists.
Both Pack men posted one-meter Zone marks in the finals and put together their best scoring outings of the season as Brady took fifth place with a mark of 326.00 and Gray placed seventh with a 309.60 clip.
Also in action for the Wolfpack men on the one-meter board, Stewart Spanbauer posted a 248.75 mark to place 23rd in his first competition of the 2018-19 season.
Four Wolfpack women also saw action on the first day at the Georgia Diving Invitational as they dove in the three-meter prelims Friday. Madeline Kline was NC State's top finisher in the event, placing 19th with a score of 255.30, and Michelle Schlossmacher Smith followed just behind her with a 238.15 personal best for 22nd place.
Freshman Taylor Bennett competed for the first time in Wolfpack uniform, taking 24th place with a 237.25 mark, and senior Bailey Revels made her season debut, placing 37th with a score of 189.15 in the prelims.
NC State's divers are set to continue action at the Georgia Diving Invitational Saturday morning, with the men competing on the three-meter board and the women competing on the one-meter board. Saturday's prelims are set for an 11 a.m. start.
