WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The seventh-ranked NC State women's basketball team (21-0, 8-0 ACC) continued its historic unbeaten run at Wake Forest on Thursday evening, defeating the Demon Deacons 59-50 inside Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
NC State led for 39:12 of the game's 40 minutes and only trailed for 10 seconds en route to holding an opponent to 50 points or fewer for the fourth time this season. The Wolfpack was very successful in getting to the free throw line, attempting a season-high 30 shots from the charity stripe. NC State uncharacteristically struggled while at the line, however, sinking just 17 of 30 attempts (.567).
The Wolfpack was led offensively by 23 points on 8-16 shooting from guard Kiara Leslie. She was joined in double figures by 10 points from Aislinn Konig. Leslie's 23-point effort marked the fifth time this season and the 10th in her career that she has scored 20+ points in a single outing. As a team, the Wolfpack committed just seven turnovers, the lowest mark of the season.
Wake Forest was led offensively by 17 points from Ivan Raca. She was joined in double figures by Gina Conti's 15 points. Ona Udoh led all players with eight rebounds. Wake Forest out-rebounded NC State 34-29, marking just the second time all season that an NC State opponent has collected more rebounds than the Wolfpack.
Postgame Notes
-NC State leads the series with Wake Forest 71-14, is 31-8 in games played in Winston-Salem, and is 9-2 against Wake Forest under head coach Wes Moore.
-The Wolfpack is one win away from tying the best start to an ACC season in program history, which is a 9-0 mark achieved during the 1977-78 and 1979-80 seasons. The first of those teams won an ACC regular-season championship while the latter won an ACC Tournament title.
-Including Thursday's win, NC State has held 20 of 21 opponents to .400 or lower shooting from the field.
In a low-scoring first half, the Wolfpack worked its way out to a 30-17 advantage at the halftime break. Both teams struggled from the field in the opening 20 minutes, with the Wolfpack shooting 10-30 (.333) while holding the Demon Deacons to 6-26 (.231). Konig led all players with 10 points on 4-8 shooting that included a 2-4 mark from distance.
The Demon Deacons pulled within nine points on three occasions in the third quarter and got as close as to within seven points three times in the fourth quarter, but each time, NC State scored the next basket or free throws to keep them at bay.
NC State returns to action at home on Sunday, Feb. 3 when rival UNC-Chapel Hill comes to town. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 pm from a sold-out Kay Yow Court inside Valvano Arena at Reynolds Coliseum. Live streaming coverage will be provided by ACC Network Extra/WatchESPN.
