NC State Falls to No. 24 Michigan at ITA Kick-Off Weekend

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The NC State men's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season as it dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 24 Michigan in the opening round of ITA Kick-Off Weekend on Saturday. With the loss, the Wolfpack falls to 2-1 on the season.
Michigan took an early lead by clinching the doubles point with a pair of wins on courts two and three. The 35th-ranked Wolverine duo of Mattias Siimar and Andrew Fenty defeated Igor Saveljic and Ivan Saveljic 6-1, and Michigan's Patrick Maloney and Myles Schalet followed behind with a 6-2 win over Georgiy Malyshev and Tadas Babelis to secure the doubles point.
Alexis Galarneau and Michael Ogden were hanging tight with Connor Johnston and Harrison Brown when play was stopped on the top doubles court. Galarneau and Ogden trailed by just a game, 4-3, before the doubles point was clinched by Michigan.
Galarneau put the Pack on the board at the start of singles action. He topped Mattias Siimar in straight sets, defeating the Wolverine junior 6-3, 6-2 to remain perfect in singles play on the season.
Michigan went on to fire off three straight-sets singles wins of its own to secure the 4-1 team win. Myles Schalet defeated Igor Saveljic 6-3, 6-3, and Gabe Tishman beat Georgiy Malyshev 6-0, 6-2 to put the Wolverines a match away from the win. Connor Johnston clinched for Michigan with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Yannai Barkai.
UP NEXT:
NC State will wrap up competition at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend on Sunday as it faces No. 12 Georgia. Sunday's match is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start at the Varsity Tennis Center.
