RALEIGH, N.C. – Coming off of a pair of season-opening victories, the NC State men's tennis team will take its first road trip of the 2019 spring season as it travels to Ann Arbor, Mich. to face 24th-ranked Michigan in the opening round of ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The Wolfpack's match against the Wolverines is set to start at 10 a.m. Saturday morning at the Varsity Tennis Center.
KICK-OFF WEEKEND FORMAT:
NC State used its selection in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend Draft this past June to elect to head to Ann Arbor as the No. 4 seed in the region, joining No. 2 seed and 11th-ranked Baylor and No. 3 seed and 13th-ranked Georgia to round out the draw.
The Pack first matches up against No. 1 seed and host Michigan on Saturday and will face either Georgia or Baylor on Sunday.
This weekend's four-team regional is one of 15 taking place across the nation this weekend. The winner of each regional site, the team that wins both of its matches on the weekend, will advance to the ITA Division I National Men's Team Indoor Championship, which will be hosted by Illinois from Feb. 15-18.
LAST TIME OUT:
The Pack opened its season with a pair of wins as it defeated visiting Northwestern and Campbell this past Sunday. The Wolfpack did not drop a match on the way to beating the Wildcats 4-0 and sweeping the Camels 7-0.
RETURN TO ITA KICK-OFF:
Saturday's match will mark the first time since the 2015-16 season that the Pack will be participating in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. NC State returns to the national indoor tournament in head coach Kyle Spencer's second season at the helm of the program and will look to advance to the ITA Indoor Championships for the first time in program history since the tournament started its current format in 2009.
SCOUTING THE WOLVERINES:
This weekend marks Michigan's first time hosting the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, and the Wolverines enter Saturday's match with an 0-1 record on the season after kicking off the dual season with a loss to No. 22 Alabama.
Michigan comes into the matchup ranked No. 24 in the nation. The Wolverines duo of Andrew Fenty and Mattias Siimar are ranked 35th nationally.
NC State leads the series between the two teams by a 3-1 mark. After dropping the first ever meeting between the programs, the Pack has won its last three matchups against the Wolverines. The teams most recently faced each other in 2014, a match that the Pack won by a 4-3 score at home in Raleigh.
UP NEXT:
After wrapping up competition at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, NC State will return home for another doubleheader at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center on Feb. 2. The Pack will face North Florida at 11 a.m. and Winthrop at 5 p.m.
