RALEIGH – The eighth-ranked NC State women's basketball team (19-0, 6-0 ACC) remained the only unbeaten team in NCAA Division I women's and men's basketball on Thursday evening by earning a thrilling 54-51 win over Clemson on Kay Yow Court inside Valvano Arena at Reynolds Coliseum.
In a game that featured four ties and 11 lead changes, the Wolfpack held a 50-39 lead with eight minutes remaining in the contest before going cold from the field. Clemson used a 12-0 run over the next 3:37 to take a 51-50 advantage just after the midway point of the fourth quarter. The Wolfpack defense then clamped down, forcing the Tigers to go 0-10 from the field down the stretch. NC State reclaimed the lead with 1:45 remaining when Aislinn Konig scored a layup on an Erika Cassell assist and the Wolfpack extended the advantage to 54-51 when Kiara Leslie scored on a great pass from Konig with 47 seconds to go.
The Wolfpack had two opportunities to extend the lead from the free throw line, but missed four straight free throws over the course of the final 23 seconds. NC State's strong defense prevailed in the end, not allowing the Tigers any quality opportunities to tie the one-possession game in the waning seconds.
DD Rogers led the Wolfpack with her first career double-double of 11 points and 15 rebounds. She was joined in double figures by Kiara Leslie (13 points), Elissa Cunane (11), and Erika Cassell (10). NC State out-rebounded Clemson 48-35 and scored 17 second-chance points to the Tigers' four. Clemson's full-court pressure generated 21 Wolfpack turnovers, but the NC State defense was also able to force 17 Clemson turnovers while limiting the Tigers to scoring 20.2 points fewer than their season average of 71.2 per game.
Clemson's Simone Westbrook led all players with 18 points on 8-16 shooting. She was joined in double figures by Aliyah Collier, who recorded a double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds.
