Men’s Golf to Open Fall Season at Gopher Invitational

RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State men's golf team opens the season Sunday at the Gopher Invitational in Independence, Minn. The Gopher Invitational has a strong field as four teams – Arkansas, NC State, Oklahoma and Texas – advanced to the NCAA Championship last season.
The Pack returns its entire lineup from last season, including ACC Player of the Year and All-American Stephen Franken.

2017-18 Recap
- The Pack finished the first season under head coach Press McPhaul with two tournament victories and advanced to the NCAA Championship for the first time since 2011.
- NC State qualified for the NCAA Championship by shooting a program-record team score of 831 to finish third in the Raleigh Regional. The score of 831 is the lowest three-round team score in an NCAA Regional in program history.
- In addition to two tournament victories, the Pack also had two players – Benjamin Shipp and Franken – claim individual medalist honors last season. Shipp won the Golfweek Conference Challenge in September, while Franken won the Wolfpack Intercollegiate in October.
NC State Lineup
1. Harrison Rhoades – Rhoades competed in 10 events last season for the Pack and finished with a season stroke average of 73.38 strokes per round. Led the team last season in the season-opener by shooting a team-low 221 to finish in a tie for 11th place out of 90 competitors.
2. Stephen Franken – Franken racked up the accolades last season as he finished the season as the ACC Player of the Year, ACC Scholar Athlete of the Year and GCAA and Golfweek All-American. He finished the season with a stroke average of 70.56 per round which was the second-lowest season stroke average in program history. He won the Wolfpack Intercollegiate in October tying program records for 54-hole score (201) and score related to par (-15) in the process.
3. Easton Paxton – Paxton was the lone freshman on the NC State roster last season and competed in 11 events for the Pack. He finished the season with a stroke average of 73.18 per round and ranked third on the team with 16 rounds played at even-par or lower. He played his best tournament of the season last year at the NCAA Regional, shooting a 210 (-3) to finish in 21st place out of 75 golfers.
4. Benjamin Shipp – Shipp competed in 11 events and 33 rounds last season for the Pack. He finished second on the team with an average of 71.94 strokes per round. He finished the season with four top-10 finishes, two top-five finishes and one victory. He set the program record for low round (64) in NCAA Regional competition and 54-hole score (201) in last May's NCAA Regional competition at Lonnie Poole.
5. Christian Salzer – Salzer competed in six events for the Pack last season. He finished the season with a 76.22 strokes per round average. He had his top finish of the season at the UNCG/Grandover Collegiate at the end of October, finishing in a tie for 28th place out of 76 competitors.
