RALEIGH, N.C. -Â The football teams from NC State and Marshall enter their meeting Saturday night on equal footing. Both teams are 2-0 and both had games had an unexpected bye last week, as they each had games wiped out by threats posed by Hurricane Florence.
Kickoff from Joan C. Edwards in Huntington, W.V.a, is set for 7 p.m., and the game will be televised on CBS Sports Network.
Â
A year ago, the Thundering Herd, coached by former NC State assistant coach Doc Holliday, made Wolfpack fans at Carter-Finley Stadium squirm by jumping out to a 20-10 lead in the second quarter. The Pack then regrouped, scoring 27 unanswered points to post a 37-20 victory.
Saturday's task figures to be even more difficult for the Wolfpack given Marshall's incredible track record in its home stadium.
"A very storied program that has won 83 percent of their games at home, the best winning percentage in the nation," said NC State head coach Dave Doeren. "It sounds like with it being a night game it's going to be a pretty good environment.
"Our guys are excited about it. We like going on the road. It's something we look forward to."
There were no big surprises in NC State's season-opening victories over James Madison and Georgia State. As expected, quarterback Ryan Finley and his bevy of talented receivers sparkled, while the running game is looking for continued improvement with veteran tailback Reggie Gallaspy being backed up by a few untested rookies.
Help may be on the way in the form of imposing 6-7, 254-pount tight end Cary Angeline. In compliance with NCAA transfer rules, the USC transfer was forced to sit out the Pack's first two games.
Now eligible, Angeline figures to add muscle to the running game with his blocking and only bolster an already impressive arsenal in the passing game. After being a spectator for two weeks, the redshirt sophomore from Chester Springs, Pa., is ready to show what he can do.
"It was kind of tough just watching the games and not being able to do anything about it," Angeline said. "I tried to mentally prepare myself, but it was definitely tough watching. It was just a part of the plan and I'm excited about being eligible now."
Finley, who raved about Angeline's size and pass catching skills during the preseason, didn't need much help in the first two games. The graduate from Phoenix has completed 74 percent of his passes for 679 yards and four touchdowns. Finley's mastery has also helped NC State convert 60 percent of its third down plays this season.
"He's just so accurate," Holliday said. "It reminds me of when I was there with Philip Rivers. If you look at it, we were pretty good on third down with Philip Rivers because he was a really good player. Finley is that kind of guy. He'll be as good of a quarterback that's ever come with a visiting team into this place since I've been here."
After the loss in Raleigh last year, Marshall went on to win five straight and post an 8-5 record, which included a 4-4 record in Conference USA.
The Thundering Herd started with triumphs over Miami of Ohio (35-28) and Eastern Kentucky (32-16) before last Saturday's game at South Carolina was cancelled.
Seventeen of the 22 starters who played against NC State last year are back, including big-play receiver Tyre Brady, who snagged 11 catches for 248 yards 12 months ago at Carter-Finley. Brady, a Miami transfer, is off to another quick start with 15 receptions for 182 yards in two games.
First-year quarterback Isaiah Green has also handled himself well, completing 62 percent of his throws for 550 yards.
"It's a very experienced team with a lot of fourth and fifth-year players," Doeren said. "The newest guy on their team is the quarterback, and he's played well. Like us, they do well when they win the turnover margin. A week and a half ago, they created five takeaways in their Eastern Kentucky win."
Given its remarkable 156-32 record at Joan C. Edwards Stadium, Marshall often has to pull teeth in an effort to get power five schools to visit Huntington. For that reason, NC State will likely encounter a rather boisterous environment for its first road game of the year.
"It's going to be as good as any environment we step into this year," said Wolfpack cornerbacks coach George Barlow, who played safety at Marshall between 1986-90. "The fans, especially at night, they're going to be fired up and getting after it from beginning to end. They're going to play with a chip on their shoulder. That's the way it was when I played and the way it is even now."
The Wolfpack leads the all-time series with Marshall 4-0, but this will mark the Pack's first visit to Huntington.
