Wolfpack Claims Three Medals On Day Three Of Phillips 66 National Championships

IRVINE, Calif. – Justin Ress, Ryan Held, and Elise Haan earned spots on the Phillips 66 National Championships podium as they secured top-three finishes in their respective events at the William Woollett, Jr. Aquatic Center Friday evening.
Ress and Held won silver and bronze, respectively, in the men's 50-meter backstroke, and Haan took third place on the women's side of the event.
The Wolfpack men got off to a quick start in the prelims, with Ress leading the way over all swimmers with a time of 24.46. He only got faster in the final, where he swam a 24.31 lifetime best that clocked in under the former American record of 24.33. He placed second behind Olympic gold medalist Ryan Murphy.
Held booked a spot in his third A final of the week after finishing first in his preliminary heat in 24.59, the fastest time of his career. He went on to clock a 24.60 in the finals to secure a third-place finish.
After the day's races, both Ress and Held own times that stand in the top 10 in the world in the 50-meter backstroke.
Haan also impressed in the 50-meter backstroke, recording lifetime bests and setting new team records in both of her races Friday. Her time of 27.90 in the finals brought her a third-place finish.
Makayla Sargent also competed in an A final Friday evening. Swimming in the 400-meter individual medley, Sargent placed sixth in 4:40.24 to establish a new team record.
The Wolfpack will be back in action Saturday and Sunday for the final two days of competition at the Philips 66 National Championships.
