RALEIGH – Members of the NC State men's and women's swimming team will compete in one of the most important domestic meets as they head to Irvine, Calif. for the 2018 Phillips 66 National Championships. The meet will be held July 25-29 at the William Woollett, Jr. Aquatic Center.
NC State will have 24 swimmers in action throughout all five days of the meet.
WOLFPACK REPRESENTATION:
Rising senior Justin Ress is set to make his return to the Phillips 66 National Championships, a meet at which he claimed a national title in the 50-meter backstroke just a year ago. His first-place finish in 2017 set the championship record in the event with a time of 24.41 seconds.
The Wolfpack men will also be represented by Coleman Stewart, who won an individual gold medal in the 100-meter backstroke at the 2018 NCAA Championships, and Olympic gold medalist Ryan Held. They will be joined by James Bretscher, Danny Erlenmeyer, Cobe Garcia, Daniel Graber, Noah Hensley, Jacob Johnson, Eric Knowles, Mark McGlaughlin, Jacob Molacek, Mason Revis and Hennessey Stuart.
From the NC State women's swimming team, Ariel Finke, Elise Haan, Jessica Horomanski, Anna Jahns, Lexie Lupton, Hannah Moore, Kathleen Moore, Ky-lee Perry, Julia Poole and Makayla Sargent will be in action at the national meet.
Hannah Moore, who is entered in the 1,500-meter and 800-meter freestyle events, has already locked up a chance to swim at the Pan Pacific Championships. She earned a selection to compete in the 10-kilometer open water event after being the third-highest American finisher at the French Open Water Championships in May.
AT STAKE:
The nation's top swimmers will be in action competing for national titles and will also be looking to earn selection to represent the United States at the 2018 Pan Pacific Championships, which runs from Aug. 9-14 in Tokyo. To earn a spot on the roster for the Pan Pacific Championships, swimmers must secure a top finish in all events except the 100-meter and 200-meter freestyle events, where the top six finishers will be invited to represent the United States as relay competitors.
The combined results of the Phillips 66 National Championships and the Pan Pacific Championships will determine the United States roster for the 2019 FINA World Championships. The meet also has implications for swimmers who are looking for a chance to earn berths on the United States' teams for the 2019 Pan American Games and the 2019 World University Games.
The 2018-19 United States Swimming National Team will be announced Aug. 31.
