Coaches receive extensions through 2020
NC State has extended the contracts of track and field/men's cross country coach Rollie Geiger and women's cross country coach Laurie Henes, Director of Athletics Debbie Yow announced on Thursday. Each received two-year extensions through the 2020 season.
"We're grateful for the commitment and leadership of Rollie Geiger and Laurie Henes and look forward to great achievements from our track and field and cross country programs," said Yow.
During Geiger's remarkable tenure at NC State, his teams have built a tradition matched by few programs nationally. His men's cross country teams have won 15 ACC Championships and secured 10 national top-10 finishes. Geiger also leads the ACC with 15 conference coach of the year honors.
"I appreciate the support of Dr. Yow and the entire athletic department," said Geiger. "I'm looking forward to continuing the success of both the track and field and cross country programs."
In 2017, Geiger led the men's cross country team to its highest national finish since 2011, and three of his athletes claimed All-ACC nods in the fall.
After being elevated from distance coach to head coach for the track and field team, Geiger has guided 87 Wolfpack athletes to 170 track and field All-America citations, with four NCAA champions included in that group.
His female distance athletes have won the 3,000m two years in a row at the ACC Indoor Championships, and the Wolfpack men won three ACC titles at the 2017 ACC Outdoor Championships, one title at the 2018 ACC Indoor Championships, and one title at the 2018 ACC Outdoor Championships.
In the fall of 2018, Geiger will enter his 38th season at the helm of the men's cross country program, which he took over in 1981 before also earning the head coaching position for the track and field program in 1984.
A former national champion in track and field and an All-American in cross country at NC State, Henes guided the women's cross country program to its second-straight ACC title in 2017. Her team carried momentum from the conference meet into the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships, where it claimed its second regional crown in a row under her leadership. NC State capped off its season with its third-straight top-10 finish at the 2017 NCAA Cross Country Championships, placing eighth as a team.
"I feel fortunate to have spent my entire career here as both a student-athlete and now a coach, and I can't thank the administration enough for their support throughout," added Henes. "I'm excited to continue going after more success and to see these programs continue to excel."
In 2017, Henes coached five cross country athletes to All-ACC honors, four to All-Region honors, and one to All-American status.
For the second year in a row and third time in her Wolfpack career, Henes was named both ACC and NCAA Southeast Region Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year. Her total of three conference coach of the year awards ranks third in conference history.
The 2018 cross country season will be Henes' 13th year as the women's head coach after joining the staff in 1992 and taking over as head coach in 2006.
Henes is also associate head coach (distance) of the track and field programs, a role to which she was promoted in the fall of 2016. Since 2016, Henes has guided NC State's female distance runners to eight All-America honors and four ACC Championships on the track.
