RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State sophomore Benjamin Shipp shot a seven-under par 64 on Tuesday, setting a program-record for low round in an NCAA Regional, to help the Pack move into second place of the NCAA Raleigh Regional held at Lonnie Poole Golf Club.
Shipp opened his round with birdies on holes 4, 7 and 9 to make the turn at three-under. On the back nine, the Duluth, Ga., native faced his first trouble as a bogey on hole 11 knocked him back to two-under. He recovered though to birdie the next two holes before another bogey on 14. Shipp closed his round with four consecutive birdies to finish at seven-under-par 64.
The 64 bests the previous NCAA Regional record of 65 held by Tim Clark in (1998) and Stephen Franken (yesterday) and marks the career-low round for Shipp.
For the tournament, Shipp sits in second place at 11-under-par, one shot back of the leader Texas' Doug Ghim.
Stephen Franken shot a two-under-par 69 on Tuesday and is tied for fourth-place on the individual leaderboard with a two-day scorecard of eight-under-par. The ACC Player of the Year had birdies on holes 2, 7 and 15 before a bogey on 17 - his first at this year's regional - dropped him to two-under par for the day.
Sitting in a tie for fourth place, Franken is in good position for his eighth top-10 finish of the season and sixth top-five finish.
Easton Paxton is in a tie for 34th place after shooting an even-par 71 on Tuesday. The lone freshman on the NC State roster, Paxton had birdies on holes 1, 14 and 17.
Justin Hood is next for NC State in a tie for 54th place. After shooting five-over par in the first five holes of the back nine, Hood closed with a birdie on 15 and three consecutive pars to finish with a second round score of 73.
Harrison Rhoades rounds out the Pack lineup in a tie for 57th place. Rhoades was at even-par on the day through 12 holes, but a pair of bogeys and a double bogey left him with a second round score of 75.
The Pack in in second place on the team leaderboard and trails second round leader Texas by eight shots. Fellow ACC members Duke and Georgia Tech are tied for third-place one shot back of NC State, while Liberty is in fifth place at 11-under-par.
The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals.
