NEW LONDON, N.C. – The NC State men's golf team is in eight place after one round of play at the 2018 ACC Men's Golf Championships held at the Old North State Golf Club.
The Pack shot a three-under par 285 in the first round and was one of nine teams in the field to shoot under par in the opening round. Shooting 12-under 276, Georgia Tech holds a one stroke lead over Notre Dame. Clemson is three strokes back in third place, while Wake Forest (-7), Florida State (-6), North Carolina (-5) and Virginia (-4) are ahead of the Pack. Duke is one shot back of NC State in ninth at two-under.
Stephen Franken and Justin Hood led the Pack in the first round with both shooting three-under par 69 to tie for 12th place on the individual leaderboard.
Coming off the best performance of his collegiate career last weekend at the Stitch Intercollegiate, Hood opened the ACC Championship on Saturday with birdies on three of the first four holes. A birdie on hole 2 (he started on hole 10) moved him to four-under for the round. He closed his round with another birdie and two bogeys.
Franken opened his round with a bogey, but quickly rebounded with three consecutive birdies on holes 13, 14 and 15. He added back-to-back birdies on holes 18 and 1 to move to four-under before a bogey on hole 5 moved him back to three-under.
Easton Paxton shot a one-over par 73 in the first round to stand in a tie for 31st place. The NC State freshman started his round with three bogeys, one par and a birdie in the first five holes, but settled down and finished the final 13 holes with two birdies and just one bogey.

Harrison Rhoades rounded out the Pack lineup with a three-over par 75. Rhoades had four birdies in the first round, just one less than Franken and Hood who both had a team-best five.
