RALEIGH – For the second straight year and third time in five seasons, the NC State women's basketball team concludes a season ranked in the national top 25. On Monday afternoon, the Wolfpack was ranked 16th in the final USA Today Coaches poll of the 2017-18 campaign.
NC State earned an impressive 26-9 record this season, hosted and won two NCAA Tournament games in Raleigh for the first time since 2007, and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 11 years. The Wolfpack's stellar season came to an end on March 23 in Kansas City, Mo., against eventual national runner-up Mississippi State.
The Wolfpack accomplished these impressive feats despite losing four seniors and 43.5 points per game from the 2016-17 season's starting lineup. NC State was selected to finish tenth in the Atlantic Coast Conference this season by a vote of the league's coaches, but defied expectations to conclude the year in a tie for fourth place after posting an 11-5 conference record.
Looking ahead to the 2018-19 season, NC State loses senior post players Akela Maize (10.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game) and Chelsea Nelson (12.9 points and 9.4 rebounds per game) to graduation, but returns the remaining three members of its starting rotation in guards Kaila Ealey (8.9 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game), Aislinn Konig (10.3 points and 3.1 assists per game), and Kiara Leslie (12.7 points and 5.9 rebounds per game).
