RALEIGH – For the third time in four years, the NC State women's basketball team has been named the NCAA Division I Play4Kay fundraising winner among "power five" schools for the 2017-18 season, the Kay Yow Cancer Fund announced on Friday.
From February 9-19, teams across the nation dedicated an event to raise awareness and funds for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. The Play4Kay Game at NC State remains an enduring and celebrated tradition through 13 seasons. The 2018 edition was no different, as the Wolfpack community gathered in strong numbers at Reynolds Coliseum on Feb. 18 to raise money and awareness in the fight against women's cancers, celebrate those who have survived cancer in a halftime ceremony, and witness the nationally-ranked Wolfpack women's basketball team defeat Wake Forest by a final score of 74-61 on Kay Yow Court.
More than 100 cancer survivors were recognized at halftime of the game in a moving ceremony that is an annual tradition at NC State. Bojangles' donated $75,000 to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, and NC State, the university community, and Wolfpack fans combined to raise an additional $29,463 for the charity.
Over the course of 13 Play4Kay games at NC State, well over $500,000 has been raised and donated to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
"Being named the winner of the 2018 Play4Kay award is a great honor, especially to all of us here at NC State," Wolfpack head coach Wes Moore said. "This is a place that loves Coach Yow and the legacy she left behind."
"Our university, our fans, and our community have shown great support, not only for annual Play4Kay games, but also for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and its work to raise awareness and continue research in the fight against women's cancers."
Since the Fund's inception, more than $5.63 million has been given in support of women's cancer research and serving the underserved.
"Play4Kay was Coach Kay Yow's vision. She saw this initiative as a way to unite the country in support of all women battling cancer. She wanted to use her platform to give strength to others. Due to the amazing support of teams from communities big and small, the Kay Yow Cancer Fund has been able to award $5.63 million on behalf of women's basketball in the fight against all women's cancers," said Stephanie Glance, CEO of the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. "We are so appreciative of the ongoing support from our 2018 national winners and all of our participating schools. Funding from Play4Kay is making a difference and directly impacting the lives of others."
