Wolfpack Advances to Sweet 16 with 74-60 Win over Maryland

RALEIGH – The NC State women's basketball team (26-8) advanced to its first Sweet 16 since 2007 by defeating Maryland 74-60 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Sunday afternoon inside Reynolds Coliseum.
All five Wolfpack starters scored in double figures during the victory, with Maryland transfer Kiara Leslie leading the way with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Aislinn Konig (12 points), Kaila Ealey (12), Akela Maize (11), and Chelsea Nelson (10) also had strong offensive games. Freshman Kai Crutchfield scored all eight of the Wolfpack's points from the bench, as she went 3-4 from the field and 2-3 from long distance.
Brianna Fraser led Maryland (26-8) with 17 points on 6-11 shooting. She was joined in double figures by 15 points from Ieshia Small and 14 from Stephanie Jones.
Postgame Notes
-NC State led for 38:34 of the game's 40 minutes while Maryland was ahead for only 1:04.
-The Wolfpack entered the game ranked #21/22 nationally. Maryland was #16/16.
-The Wolfpack outrebounded the Terrapins by a 39-35 margin and has now outrebounded its opponents 28 times this season.
-Sophomore Aislinn Konig hit two three-pointers and is now at 90 and tied for the highest single-season total in program history with Jennifer Howard (1995-96 season).
-NC State improves to 43-35 in the all-time series with Maryland and is 2-0 against the Terrapins since Wes Moore took over in 2013 as head coach.
-NC State has now won 26 games in a single season for just the fifth time in program history.
"I'm just so proud of these young ladies," NC State head coach Wes Moore said in his postgame press conference. "I've got so much respect for Maryland and Brenda Frese and her program. All year long, this group has battled. They were picked to finish 10th in the ACC, and now they're in the Sweet Sixteen. That's saying a lot, and I'm really proud of them."
Maryland only led on two occasions during the first quarter, and not once after the 7:48 mark. The Wolfpack shot 7-14 (.500) from the field in the first quarter and limited the Terrapins to just 3-15 (.200) en route to taking an 18-11 lead at the end of the period.
NC State scored six of the first eight points in the second quarter to move out to an 11-point advantage (24-13) with 8:44 remaining in the half. The Terrapins would claw back on multiple occasions, pulling within three points three different times down the stretch of the first half, but NC State managed to take a 32-26 lead into the halftime break.
The Terrapins enjoyed a strong start to the third quarter with a 9-2 run that pulled them within one point (35-34) just 3:29 into the second half. Leslie answered with an important basket at the 5:42 mark to make it 37-34, but Maryland's Fraser scored down low to bring the Terrapins back within one point. NC State used an 8-0 run to extend its advantage back out to nine points (45-36), and would then score 11 of the next 15 points during the final 3:03 of the quarter to take a comfortable 56-40 lead into the game's final 10 minutes.
NC State did not allow Maryland to come any closer than within 11 points (62-51 and 71-60) during the fourth quarter.
The Wolfpack will now travel to Kansas City, Mo., this week to compete in the Sweet 16 on Friday, March 23 at 7 pm ET (6 pm local) against Mississippi State.
