ATLANTA – Highlighted by Chandley Garner's three-run homer in the sixth inning the NC State softball team defeated Georgia Tech on Saturday 4-2 at Mewborn Field to even the weekend series.
The Wolfpack handed the Yellow Jackets their first ACC loss of the season, improving to 15-10 (3-4 ACC) on the season. Tech falls to 15-9 (4-1 ACC) on the season.
Rychcik's Review
"I liked the way we competed today," said head coach Shawn Rychcik. "There were some tough situations on the field but we managed to get out of them. We put some pressure on them and put our bunts down well today. I give Devin (Wallace) a lot of credit for coming back on day two and throwing some quality pitches to keep us in it. We were able to take the lead with the three-run homer and even the series, and we'll look to win tomorrow."
How It Happened
-The Pack struck first in the second inning when it took a one-run lead. Cheyenne Balzer led off with a single to left center and advanced on Alyssa Compton's sacrifice bunt. A Georgia Tech error on Haylee Kobziak's pop up allowed Balzer to plate a run from second base.
-Georgia Tech knotted the game in the third inning. A leadoff walk and double off the right center wall put runners on second and third for the Jackets, and a sacrifice fly to right field allowed the runner at third to cross home plate.
-The Jackets took their first lead of the game in the fourth on an RBI single to center field. After a pair of singles led off the inning and a fly out to right field put runners at the corners to start the threat.
-Chandley Garner put the Pack back out in front in the sixth inning with a three-run home run to left field. Angie Rizzi and Timberlyn Shurbutt led off the inning with infield singles, and a double steal moved them to second and third.
-The Jackets threatened in the bottom frame with the bases loaded and one out, but Shurbutt made an inning-ending double play when she fielded a ground ball, tagged third and threw to Balzer at first. The Pack's defense shut down the Jackets in the seventh inning, retiring the team in order.
