Erika Cassell records first career double-double in defeat
February 8, 2018
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The No. 23/23 NC State women's basketball team (19-6, 8-4 ACC) endured its first loss in over a month on Thursday evening, falling 52-48 at Miami to snap a seven-game Atlantic Coast Conference winning streak.
The Wolfpack led 48-47 with 1:54 to play, but a basket through contact by Miami's Keyanna Harris with nine seconds remaining swung the lead into the Hurricanes' favor for the final time. NC State had a chance at a winning shot with possession of the ball and nine seconds left, but an unfortunate turnover gave the ball back to the Hurricanes, and they were able to finish the game from the free throw line.
Sophomore Erika Cassell recorded the first double-double of her career with 11 points and 11 rebounds in 25 minutes of play. She was joined in double figures by Chelsea Nelson and Kiara Leslie, who each also scored 11 points.
Miami's Harris led all players with 17 points on 7-11 shooting. She was joined in double figures by Kelsey Marshall (14 points) and Emese Hof (13).
"We weren't really getting the looks we wanted tonight," NC State head coach Wes Moore said in his postgame radio interview with broadcaster Andrew Sanders. "Last year I said the same thing after this game when I look at the stats and look at our situation. We should have given the ball to Chelsea Nelson. She and Erika Cassell were shooting a decent percentage. Erika had a great night for us off the bench, getting a double-double.
"We should have gone inside there some down the stretch because the three wasn't going for us tonight."
