SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The No. 21/22 NC State women's basketball team (22-7, 11-5 ACC) concluded the 2017-18 regular season with an 86-67 defeat at No. 5/4 Notre Dame (27-2, 15-1 ACC) Sunday afternoon inside Purcell Pavilion.
With Sunday's result and other action around the Atlantic Coast Conference on the final day of the regular season, the Wolfpack tied for fourth in the league standings and claimed the No. 5 seed in the ACC Tournament despite a preseason prediction of 10th by the league's coaches. The team will open play at 11 a.m. inside the Greensboro Coliseum on Thursday, Mar. 1 against the winner of Boston College and UNC-Chapel Hill.
Kaila Ealey led the Wolfpack with 18 points on 6-11 shooting from the field including a career-best mark of 4-5 from three-point range. Chelsea Nelson (15 points) and Kiara Leslie (10) joined Ealey in double figures. Nelson grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.
Notre Dame's Jackie Young led all players with 22 points on 8-11 shooting. She was joined in double figures by Arike Ogunbowale (21 points), Marina Mabrey (17), and Kathryn Westbeld (16). The Fighting Irish shot 35-64 (.547) from the field and earned a 37-28 rebounding edge over the Wolfpack.
"Notre Dame's transition is so good," NC State head coach Wes Moore said in a postgame interview. "If you turn it over, that just gets them going. I think they scored 24 points off turnovers, so that was the ballgame right there. We need to learn to take care of it a little better and we've got to do a better job in transition defense. Got to give them a lot of credit. (Head coach) Muffet (McGraw) has done a great job considering all of the injuries they have had. They have kids out there who are obviously talented, but they have gotten better and better as the year has gone by."
The Wolfpack played a strong first 20 minutes against the Irish, shooting 12-27 (.444) from the field to look up at a 39-31 deficit at the halftime break. Nelson led NC State with nine points on 3-6 shooting, while sophomore Aislinn Konig spread the ball around well by dishing out three assists. Notre Dame shot 15-29 (.517) from the field and was led offensively by 13 points on 5-10 shooting from Ogunbowale.
NC State scored 12 of the first 18 points in the third quarter to pull within two points (45-43) just 3:52 after halftime when Leslie scored on a layup from an Ealey assist. The Irish got hot at this point, outscoring the Wolfpack 21-6 throughout the rest of the quarter to take a comfortable 66-49 advantage into the final 10 minutes. Notre Dame would extend its lead to 24 points on multiple occasions throughout the fourth quarter before the game arrived at its final margin.
