RALEIGH – The #37 NC State women's tennis team split its matches Wednesday, falling 5-2 to #1 UNC-Chapel Hill at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center before returning to the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center to earn a 6-1 victory over ETSU.
#37 NC State vs. #1 UNC-CH:
While the Wolfpack suffered a 6-1 setback to the first-ranked Tar Heels, #113 Anna Rogers earned an outstanding 6-4, 6-3 win over #8 Alle Sanford at the No. 1 position. Tayla Stenta also earned a gutsy win at the No. 6 spot, as she outlasted Chloe Ouellet-Pizer 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (15-13).
#37 NC State vs. ETSU:
The Wolfpack closed the night out under the lights at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center strongly; #12 Wiktorin & Rogers overcame Alory Pereira and Ioanna Markesini 6-0 at the No. 1 positon while Bianca Moldovan and Adriana Reami earned the win at the No. 2 spot as they defeated Yi Chi Ma and Melissa Esguerra 6-4.
In singles #113 Rogers defeated Ioanna Markesini 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 and #94 Wiktorin secured a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga at No. 3. The remainder of the lineup also impressed as Bianca Moldovan toppled Melissa Esguerra 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4, Taylor Bridges stymied Alejandra Morales 7-5, 6-3 at No. 5 and Tayla Stenta earned her second win of the day at No. 6, prevailing over Esther Guemes 6-1, 6-4.
From the Coach
"It was kind of a late start for a doubleheader with the 3 p.m. match at UNC-CH," said head coach Simon Earnshaw. "I thought we competed well at UNC-CH, it was a great win for Anna and I think that one's been coming for a few weeks now. I was impressed with the way she finished that off. Tayla really stepped up and while she hasn't had that many opportunities, she took her opportunity there beating Pizer at No. 6 singles. The ETSU match was a little bit frantic; we had to shuffle our lineup at the last minute unfortunately. We were a little bit out of synch in doubles, at No. 1 we did the business. In singles I thought we were pretty efficient up-and-down, I'd like to have seen us close that out with Adriana's match at the end. Overall, it was a long day and we unfortunately could not get the match against UNC-CH but it was good to see us bounce back in the nightcap."
