RYCHCIK'S REVIEW
Overall thoughts on the win
"Yesterday was a long and tough day in the cold and rain," said head coach Shawn Rychcik. "Both pitchers were sore today and I'm sure everyone else was too, but everyone did a good job and had a good energy. We took advantage of their wildness as a staff, and I told our kids not to worry about the hits it's just about how we put the runs up. We worked eight walks off of them today so hats off to our hitters for those at bats. It was just a good bounce back win against a good opponent."
Overall thoughts on going 2-2 this weekend against two strong teams
"I think we could have been 3-1 or 4-0. I thought we were as good if not better than both teams we played this weekend. Our challenge this year will be playing up to our potential as a group. We have moments where we see how good we are and can be, and we'll continue to grow and move forward as a young group. Our upperclassmen are doing a great job and our freshmen are contributing. That's a good combination."
HOW IT HAPPENED
-After both teams went in order in the first inning NC State grabbed a 3-0 lead in the second. The first two runs were scored on bases-loaded walks, and Jade Caraway's' single to right field with the bases loaded brought in the third run.
-Northwestern got on the board in the fourth when Rachel Lewis led off the inning with a home run to center field.
-In the fifth the Pack extended its lead to three when Cheyenne Balzer's single up the middle allowed Angie Rizzi to score from second after she led off the frame with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt.
-The Wildcats tried to rally in the seventh. A hit-by-pitch and walk started the inning, and a single up the middle followed by an error allowed a run to score. The Pack managed to retire the next three batters on a strikeout and pair of groundouts to seal the win.
-Kama Woodall clinched her third win of the season in the circle and Devin Wallace earned her first save of the year after entering the game in the fifth inning and giving up one hit and an unearned run.
-Along with Caraway and Balzer, Alyssa Compton and Sam Russ tallied a hit to give the team four on the day.
