
Franken Off to Record Start; Pack in Second at Puerto Rico Classic

Franken set Puerto Rico Classic record with 18-hole score of 62

NC State men's golf junior Stephen Franken set two Puerto Rico Classic records and led the Pack to a tie for second place after one round of play in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
Playing in a tough field that features five teams ranked in the top-20 of the Golfstat Rankings, including No. 3 Georgia Tech and top-ranked Alabama, Franken set Puerto Rico Classic records with an 18-hole score of 62 and score in relation to par (-9).
Starting on Hole 5 on a shotgun start, Franken birdied holes five six and eight to start the day. After a par on Hole 9, the sophomore birdied 10 and 12 to sit at five-under-par after eight holes.
Franken had pars on the next four holes, before birdieing Hole 17 and Hole 1.
The Raleigh native closed his round with an eagle on Hole 3 to card an opening round 62.
Franken has a five-shot lead on the field after one round.
Justin Hood and Christian Salzer both shot even-par 71 on Sunday to stand in a tie for 25th place. Hood had two birdies and two bogeys in his round, while Salzer had a solid round after a rough start. After opening the tournament with a double bogey, Salzer did not have another bogey on the day as he birdied Holes 13 and 18 to come in at even par.
Easton Paxton was next for the Pack with a score of 72 to stand in a tie for 33rd place. The freshman closed his day with a birdie on Hole 6.
Nolan Mills Jr. rounded out the Pack lineup with a 73 and is currently in a tie for 37th place. Like Paxton, Mills birdied one of his final holes of the day, No. 5, to head into the clubhouse on a strong note.
Round 2 will begin at 8 a.m. Monday morning with a shot-gun start. The Pack will be playing with Oklahoma and Georgia Tech and will tee off on holes 1-4.
