NC State improves to 8-0 in dual matches, with a 4-0 record on the road
February 17, 2018
RICHMOND, Va. – In its second road match in as many days, the NC State men's tennis team defeated VCU 5-2 to improve to 8-0 in dual match play.
"It was a good team effort today, even after dropping the doubles point," said head coach Kyle Spencer. "Igor (Saveljic) and Tadas (Babelis) showed a ton of passion and heart and fight for our program after dropping their first sets in singles. I'm really proud of them. It was good to see Alexis (Galarneau) beat another quality opponent, and Robo (Robert Turzak) tough out a three-set win. For the weekend as a whole, I'm very pleased with how competitive we were. It shows we're not afraid of a fight. We're excited to get back home next weekend as we host Furman."
Playing at the Thalhimer Tennis Center in Richmond, Va., the Rams grabbed an early lead in the match by taking the doubles point. Wolfpack duo Michael Ogden and Georgiy Malyshev managed to tally a 6-3 doubles victory over Timo Zgraggen and Inigo Torre Martin, but VCU went on to win the remaining doubles courts.
Vitor Lima and Philip Mobius defeated Alexis Galarneau and Tadas Babelis 6-4, and Javier Amantegui and Arvid Noren secured the point with a 6-3 win over Igor Saveljic and Ivan Saveljic.
Singles started with a win for the Wolfpack to even the match score. Nineteenth-ranked Galarneau jumped out to an early lead in his match, ultimately beating Lima 6-1, 7-5 on court one.
Igor added another win for the Pack on court three, taking down Noren in come-from-behind fashion. Noren won the first set, but Igor cruised through the next two sets to earn the 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 victory.
On court two, Babelis, who was facing VCU's Amantegui, also fought back from a set down. He completed a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win to give NC State its third singles decision of the day.
Ivan locked up the match for the Wolfpack on court five, where he quickly bested Zgraggen by a 6-1, 6-0 score.
Malyshev fought against VCU's Philip Mobius, but Mobius emerged victorious on court five in a 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), 1-0 (10-7) battle.
Robert Turzak wrapped things up on court six, toughing out a 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 (10-8) win against Torre Martin to end the Wolfpack's day.
