RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State men's tennis team powered its way past Furman, 7-0, for its ninth win of the season Sunday afternoon at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. With the win, the Wolfpack improves to a perfect 9-0, while the Paladins fall to 9-3.
"Great job from our guys in doubles today," said head coach Kyle Spencer. "I'm really impressed with Furman coming out and playing a good doubles point. Excited for Alexis (Galarneau) to play a guy (Cameron Green) who played high-caliber tennis today. It was a great job by Alexis to weather the storm and get through that match because it was high-level tennis, and it was exciting for the fans to see that. I'm excited for where the program is going with the worth ethic and the attention to detail. We've got to get ready for a very good Texas team coming in here on Friday."
The Wolfpack opened its afternoon by jumping out to a 1-0 lead. Igor Saveljic and Ivan Saveljic started doubles with a break and did not look back on the way to blanking Furman's Drew Singerman and Ivan Mitric 6-0 on court two.
Courts one and three both came down to tiebreakers. Alexis Galarneau and Tadas Babelis emerged victorious over Cameron Green and Jake Munns on court one, winning 7-6 (4) to clinch the doubles point. Georgiy Malyshev and Michael Ogden were up 4-2 in their tiebreaker when play was suspended on court two.
NC State earned three quick singles wins, each in straight sets, to clinch the match.
Igor defeated Ivan Mitric 6-1, 6-1 on court three to give the Wolfpack its first singles victory of the day.
Babelis won his fifth match in a row and improved to 8-1 on the dual match season in singles. He beat Jake Munns by a 6-3, 6-2 score on court two.
On court four, Malyshev, who has also lost only one singles match this spring, secured NC State's win as he bested Drew Singerman 6-1, 6-2.
NC State won all three of its remaining matches to put the final score at 7-0.
In a matchup between ranked players on court one, No. 19 Galarneau rallied to beat Furman's No. 110 Cameron Green. Green won the first set 6-3, but Galarneau took the second set 7-6 (4) and won the buster for the third set 10-6.
Robert Turzak also extended his match into a tiebreaker for the third set. He fought to a 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5) win against Furman's Daniel Vishnick.
Ivan secured the Wolfpack's sweep in a 4-6, 7-6 (4), 1-0 (10-8) decision against Jake Bhangdia on court five.
