RALEIGH – Highlighted by freshman Timberlyn Shurbutt's grand slam in the sixth inning, the NC State softball team opened its home slate on Friday evening in #STATEment fashion, defeating No. 22 Ohio State 5-4 (8) in its first game of the ACC/B1G Challenge at Dail Stadium.
The Wolfpack improves to 4-2 on the season, giving the Buckeyes their first loss of the season as they move to 5-1.
RYCHCIK'S REVIEW
"When you're young like us there's going to be a lot of challenges in how to keep people from getting down," said head coach Shawn Rychcik. "We're learning. We had all six freshmen play today and had a lot of sophomores in the lineup. We keep harping on the fact that we're going to have some moments, but it's nice to see the resiliency of this team only six games in. After we were down 2-0 and Timberlyn (Shurbutt) had a big hit in the sixth to give us a lead, they tied the game up in the seventh. We had a chance in the seventh and another in the eighth and we were able to get it done. A win is a win so I'm really happy with how we competed the entire game."
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Ohio State quickly took a 2-0 lead when Lilli Piper hit a two-run home run to right field after Niki Carver reached on a fielder's choice to second base when the leadoff batter was hit-by-pitch.
-In the sixth inning Shurbutt put the Pack on board with her grand slam to center field, the first home run of her career, after Jade Caraway reached on an error and Angie Rizzi and Cheyenne Balzer were walked.
-The Buckeyes battled back in the seventh to knot the game at four when Carver hit a two-run home run to left field following a leadoff walk.
-In the eighth inning pinch runner Macauley Prickett scored the winning run after an obstruction call was made. Lily Bishop started the inning after being hit-by-pitch and Shurbutt followed with single to center field. The runners advanced on Alyssa Compton's sacrifice bunt. With pinch hitter Jessica Moore at bat Ohio State's second baseman Amy Balich tried to stop Prickett from scoring, throwing the ball to home plate, but the obstruction call allowed the run to score.
-Kama Woodall picked up the win in the circle after relieving Devin Wallace in the sixth inning, improving to 2-1 on the season. The two struck out a combined nine batters and gave up seven hits.
-Shurbutt led the team at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance while Compton and Sam Russ each tallied a hit.
