RALEIGH – The NC State men's tennis team (6-0) is set to make a trip to Virginia this weekend as it travels to Old Dominion for a 1 p.m. match on Friday and turns around to visit VCU at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
"We've got a tough test in both Old Dominion and VCU," said head coach Kyle Spencer. ""I have a lot of respect for the Old Dominion team, as the head coach (Dominik Mueller) is one of my former players at Baylor. He's done a great job of taking a talented team and making them better. VCU is coached by an absolute legend in Paul Kostin, who has something (that seems) like 5,000 victories since he's been at VCU. We have the utmost respect for his team.
"I really enjoyed the last week of practice with the guys and how disciplined they've been at improving their skills and their understanding of the strategies we're putting in place. Going on the road is never easy, but it's a chance to come together as a team with no distractions. We're excited for the weekend ahead."
LAST TIME OUT:
NC State comes off of a successful weekend of home competition after beating Elon and Coastal Carolina in dominant fashion. The Wolfpack defeated Elon by a 6-1 score and turned around to sweep Coastal Carolina two days later.
The only point that the Wolfpack surrendered all of last weekend was the doubles decision against Elon, as Tadas Babelis, Alexis Galarneau, Georgiy Malyshev, Igor Saveljic, Ivan Saveljic, and Robert Turzak all went unbeaten in singles play.
Babelis and Galarneau paired up for doubles for the first time this season, taking down pairs from both Elon and Coastal Carolina on the way to a 2-0 weekend.
SCOUTING THE MONARCHS:
Old Dominion sits at 5-3 on its season, most recently coming off of a 6-1 loss to No. 25 South Carolina. The Monarchs boast a nationally-ranked singles player in No. 76 Aziz Kijametovic, who is 7-1 in singles play on the season thus far. Kijametovic and Francois Musitelli are also featured in the doubles rankings at No. 30.
Old Dominion holds a slight 13-11 edge in the series and won the last meeting between the two programs on Jan. 13, 2017.
SCOUTING THE RAMS:
VCU picked up six straight wins to start its season before dropping its first dual match Tuesday in a narrow 4-3 loss to Louisiana. The Rams, who are the defending Atlantic-10 champions, reached the NCAA Tournament during the 2017 season.
NC State has won its last three matchups against VCU. The Wolfpack leads its series against the Rams 7-6, with the last win coming on Feb. 19, 2017 in 6-1 fashion.
