RALEIGH, N.C. -- NC State women's tennis senior Amanda Rebol is proud of how far the program has come since she arrived on campus.
"It's crazy. Coming in as a freshman, we weren't ranked. We were lower in the ACC. Not only have we improved our ranking and our stance in the conference, but we changed the culture. We really want to win.
My freshman year, we made the chant 'We are red, we are white, we are here to fight. Go Pack!' It was a big part of what we wanted to do and who we wanted to be moving forward."
Describing her teammates as "hardworking and driven," Rebol sees the cultural change in the tenacity the team brings to the table every day: "We all have the same mindset that we want to win. Everyone is on the same page with that."
'Everyone' on the tennis team equates to a total of nine members. While it is a small team, Rebol wouldn't have it any other way.
"It's awesome. We do everything together. You would think that because we are a small team, we would get sick of each other. The underclassmen are always over at our apartment. It's a really cool experience. You get to build deeper bonds with the girls on the team because we are a small team."
Looking forward to the 2019 season with her teammates, Rebol and the Wolfpack have a few goals in mind.
"We want to finish as a top-20 team and make the NCAA Tournament Round of 16. Those are our biggest goals.
We're an older team now. We have three seniors and two juniors. That definitely gives us a leg up with experience in the situations we might face."
Rebol's individual goals include contributing the intangibles for the season that will contribute to the Pack's overall success.
"I strive to be a leader and keep everyone energized. I'm pretty loud all the time. I just try and keep everyone hyped up. We do a lot of training. It's easy to get tired. Little things like saying 'go Pack' in practice or trying to keep people laughing – it brings energy. Whatever I can do to amp up the energy is always good."
Rebol is excited to suit up for her last season in a NC State uniform, as the relationships she has built in her time on campus will last a lifetime.
"This place is home. The team, the coaches, and the staff are family. When I visited campus, I told my mom that I could see this place as my home. That was big for me. I'm going to miss that.
This has been my home for four years now. I know I'll be back, that's for sure. Raleigh can't fully get rid of me."
