RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State volleyball team will travel to South Bend, Ind., this weekend for the Wolfpack's final road match of the season against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. First serve is set for 8 p.m. Friday night inside Purcell Pavilion.
The match will be broadcast live on the ACC Network Extra, accessible through Watch ESPN and the Watch ESPN App.
NC State makes the trip with a 12-12 overall record and a 6-8 mark in ACC play, while Notre Dame is 15-9 and 9-5 against conference opponents.
Last Time Out
In its last outing, the Wolfpack battled to win a five-set thriller against the Duke Blue Devils at home inside Reynolds Coliseum last Sunday afternoon. NC State has now won three consecutive home matches against Duke, as third-year Wolfpack head coach Linda Hampton-Keith is a perfect 3-0 in her tenure versus the squad at home.
Last Time Versus Notre Dame
NC State defeated Notre Dame, 3-1, at home on Sept. 23 to earn its first conference win of the season. In that matchup, the Pack recorded 94 digs as a team which are the second most in the rally-scoring era of program history in a four-set match.
That mark is also the second-most in a four-set match by any team in the ACC this season. Senior libero Makenzie Kuchmaner tallied a career-best 32 digs to set the rally-scoring era program record for a four-set match and that total is the second most by a player in the conference this year.
Last Time at Notre Dame
The Wolfpack dropped a hard-fought 3-2 decision against the Fighting Irish in its last visit to Purcell Pavilion on Nov. 19, 2017. NC State trailed 2-1 in the contest but forced the match to five sets before falling against the hosts.
Despite the loss, NC State broke the rally-scoring era program record with 106 digs against the Irish last season. In the last two matches against Notre Dame, the Wolfpack has charted 200 digs, averaging 22.22 digs per set.
Scouting Notre Dame
Notre Dame is in the midst of a strong season under first-year head coach Mike Johnson, who took over as head coach following three years as associate head coach. The Fighting Irish have hit their stride recently, having won four of their last five matches with the only loss against Florida State.
The Irish have compiled a 9-3 record in home matches inside Purcell Pavilion. Thanks to its win earlier this year, NC State leads the all-time series against Notre Dame, 5-4, including a 5-2 advantage as conference opponents.
Outside hitters Jemma Yeadon and Charley Niego lead the Fighting Irish offensively, as Yeadon has tallied 3.44 kills per set and Niego has put down 3.14 kps. At setter, Zoe Nunez is third in the ACC with 10.71 assists per set and libero Ryann DeJarld paces the conference with 5.01 digs per set.
As a team, Notre Dame has compiled a .206 team attacking percentage and opponents have been held to a .156 clip.
Battle of the ACC's Best Defenses
Two of the conference's best defenses will be on display Friday night, as the Fighting Irish lead the ACC with 16.40 digs per set and the Wolfpack ranks second in the league with 15.02 dps. Additionally, Notre Dame is second in the conference with 2.86 blocks per set, which is ninth in the NCAA.
The matchup will also feature two of the ACC's best liberos, as DeJarld headlines the conference with 5.01 digs per set and NC State's Kuchmaner is second with 4.47 dps.
The Higher, The Better
NC State owns a perfect 11-0 record this season when recording a higher team attacking percentage than its opponents.
Magic Numbers
The Wolfpack is also unbeaten on the year when tallying a team attacking percentage better than .200 with a 9-0 record. Defensively, NC State has held its opponents below .200 in 11 of its wins this season.
