RALEIGH, N.C. -Â When it plays at Louisville (2-8, 0-7 ACC) on Saturday at 12:20 p.m., NC State (6-3, 3-3) hopes to look like, well, NC State.
What does that look like? At its best this season, the Wolfpack has controlled the line of scrimmage, run the football, converted third downs and caught the ball well.
The game will be televised by Raycom.
Â
Those characteristics, however, were not always on display in a disappointing home loss to Wake Forest a week ago Thursday.
Among other things, the 27-23 setback against the Deacons included crucial drops, just 47 yards rushing, six conversions in 16 tries on third down. The rushing stats were heavily skewed by 11 tackles for loss. Adding to insult to injury, the Pack scored only one touchdown in five forays into the red zone.
"For us, it's more about us," said NC State head coach Dave Doeren. "We need to get back to running the ball, catching the ball and making those plays. We have to break some tackles, tackle well in space and do all the little things that helped us win some good games this year."
By Saturday, the Wolfpack will have had nine days to chew on the bitter taste of what happened on senior night against Wake.
"We want to get that bad taste out of our mouth," said wide receiver Jakobi Meyers. "We worked had to win that game, but I still don't think we're out. I feel like we have a lot to play for."
With three regular season games remaining, NC State's hopes of recording a 10-win regular season have dissipated, but getting to the 10-victory plateau for only the second time in school history is still achievable with three regular season wins and success at a bowl game.
It's abundantly clear that NC State is a different team when it's able to establish control up front and run the ball. In its last win, a 47-28 triumph over Florida State on November 3rd, the Wolfpack had a ratio of 49 rushes to 28 passes. Those numbers were influenced by the Pack's ability to run for 177 yards. In the Wake Forest game, with the running game stymied, the ratio was reversed, with 27 running plays compared to 53 passes.
In its six wins this season, NC State has tallied 237 rushes compared to 216 pass plays. In the three losses, the Wolfpack was forced to put the ball in the air 132 times compared to 87 rushes.
"We only have a few weeks left, so we need to get the stress out, stop worrying about a lot of things and go out there and have fun, "said NC State tailback Reggie Gallaspy, Jr. "If you go out there and have fun, you'll execute. If you're out there having fun and executing, you'll have a good game."
There has certainly been a shortage of fun at Louisville this week. On Sunday, athletic director Vince Tyra relieved head coach Bobby Petrino of his duties and replaced him with safeties coach Lorenzo Ward, who will serve as interim coach for the rest of the season. The Cardinals are in the midst of a seven-game losing streak.
"Obviously, there's a lot going on there and I have no idea how that's going to impact their football team," Doeren said. "All I can do is watch the film, look at their players and their schemes. We'll have to do some adjusting on game day, there's no doubt. You don't know what they'll do with Bobby not calling their plays and different things like that."
In their last meeting, a Thursday night nationally televised contest a year ago when both squads were ranked, the NC State-Louisville game featured a must-see matchup pitting Wolfpack defensive end Bradley Chubb against Louisville's Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Lamar Jackson. In what was a scintillating atmosphere at Carter-Finley Stadium, Chubb and the Pack bested Jackson and the Cards, 39-25.
And while the energy at Cardinals Stadium likely won't be as electric on Saturday, it will be up to NC State to return to its early season form.
"Any team is beatable if you don't go in there and take care of business," Gallaspy said. "That's what happen to us in the Wake Forest game. In the back our heads, we need to go out there and treat them like they're Clemson or Alabama."
The Wolfpack Sports Network begins pregame coverage Saturday with the Lowe's Foods Countdown to Kickoff at 10:00 a.m. Shorty after 11:00 a.m., veteran color analyst Johnny Evans will take questions about Wolfpack football on 'Ask the Analyst.'
