
Vazaios, Stewart Close Out ACC/Big Ten Challenge with First-Place Finishes

NC State secures 11 podium finishes on the final day of competition at the inter-conference meet.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The NC State men's and women's swimming and diving teams wrapped up action at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge Sunday as Andreas Vazaios and Coleman Stewart picked up individual wins on the final day of competition at the inaugural meet.
Vazaios (21 points), Stewart (13 points) and Jacob Molacek (13 points) were the ACC's leading scorers, all earning individual gold medals over the course of the two-day meet. The Pack men and women finished on the podium 19 times at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
The Big Ten swept the meet, with its men winning by a narrow 179-174 margin and its women taking the 251-102 victory.
INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCES:
Stewart continued to take command of the 100-yard backstroke as he picked up another win in the event at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. He touched the wall in 45.04 for the first-place finish in NCAA A cut time.
Vazaios also picked up a gold medal, his coming in the 200-yard individual medley. The Wolfpack senior took first place with a time of 1:42.44 that reclaimed his spot as the nation's fastest swimmer in that event this season.
Seniors Jacob Molacek and Vazaios went 2-3 for the Wolfpack men in the 200-yard freestyle both with NCAA B cuts. Molacek dropped time on his way to taking second place with a mark of 1:34.48, a time that is the fastest in the ACC this season and moved him into the program's top 10 all-time list.
Justin Ress impressed in the 50-yard freestyle, taking second place as he clocked a sub-20 and NCAA B cut time of 19.70.
Elise Haan (52.77) and Ky-lee Perry (22.24) also picked up podium finishes as they placed third in the 100-yard backstroke and the 50-yard freestyle, respectively.
Tamila Holub and Julia Poole were the ACC's top finishers in each of their respective events as they both picked up fourth-place finishes. Holub clocked a season-best 9:41.09 in the 1,000-yard freestyle to improve on her conference-best time. Poole also touched the wall with the ACC's fastest time in the women's 200-yard individual medley with a 1:57.68 NCAA B mark.
RELAY HIGHLIGHTS:
The Wolfpack started the day strong with its swimmers in action in the 200-yard medley relays. Haan took second place with the ACC's top relay team, clocking a 24.45 backstroke split to help the squad to a 1:35.38 finish.
Stewart and Ress also took second place by .30 seconds in the opening relays of the session as they teamed up on the same ACC squad. Stewart led off with a 21.10 backstroke split, and Ress closed with an 18.71 free split, with both of those times clocking in as the fastest splits for each respective stroke across all eight of the relay teams competing.
NC State closed out by fielding the bulk of the winning men's 400-yard freestyle relay team, as Stewart, Molacek and Ress helped lead the ACC to a victory with a time of 2:49.64.
DIVING:
James Brady closed out his time at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge with a seventh-place finish in the platform dive, tallying a score of 336.30.
UP NEXT:
NC State will return to the state of Indiana next weekend to compete at the IU Invitational, which is set to run Nov. 15-17 at the Counsilman Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington.
