Volleyball’s Comeback Attempt Falls Short at Miami

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The NC State volleyball team looked to mount a comeback with a dominant performance in the third set, but fell to the Miami Hurricanes, 3-1 (18-25, 21-25, 25-15, 21-25), Sunday afternoon inside the Knight Sports Complex.
 
After dropping the first two sets, the Wolfpack gained some momentum in the third set with a 25-15 win, the largest margin of victory for either team in a set during the match. NC State played well in the fourth set but could not hold off Miami down the stretch as the Hurricanes won the match, 3-1.
 
NC State falls to 8-8 on the year and 2-4 in ACC play after a tough four-match road swing, while Miami moves to 9-4 and 4-1 in conference action.
 
Match Rewind
- NC State had a slow start to the match, as Miami jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the opening frame but the Wolfpack battled back to knot the set at six.
- After a service error to trim the Pack's deficit to 19-17, the Hurricanes won six of the next seven points to take the first set, 25-18.
- The Wolfpack jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the second set to force a Miami timeout after a service ace from Keira Moore.
- After the break, the Canes regrouped to later knot the set at 15-15 after an attacking error by the Wolfpack.
- NC State went on a 3-0 run to take a 19-17 lead following consecutive blocks from Lauryn Terry and Kylie Pickrell.
- Unfortunately, the Hurricanes went on a run down the stretch to take the set, 25-21.
- The Wolfpack responded with a strong third set to grab some momentum in the match, as NCSU grabbed control of the set early and led most of the frame.
- Senior Sarah Konchan gave the Pack a huge boost off the bench with four kills in the third set to lift the Wolfpack to a .259 team attacking percentage, the highest of the match.
- A 5-1 run extended NC State's lead to 10-4 after a kill from Jade Parchment and a kill from Pickrell gave the Wolfpack the largest lead in any set on the day at nine, 18-9.
- After Miami rallied to cut the deficit to 19-15, NC State scored six unanswered points to close out the set with a 25-15 win.
- The fourth set was tightly contested until a 3-0 run from Miami to give the Hurricanes a 20-16 lead.
- A solo block from Parchment trimmed the NC State deficit to 20-19, but Miami won five of the next seven points to win the set and the match, 3-1.
 
Top Performers
- Sophomore Melissa Evans tallied a match-high 16 kills, while Parchment put down eight.
- Konchan recorded seven kills in a nice performance and Moore added five.
- Pickrell logged her seventh double-double of the year with 32 assists and 17 digs, which led all players.
- Senior libero Makenzie Kuchmaner contributed 10 digs and Kaylee Frazier added eight. Along with Parchment.
