RALEIGH – With conference tournament seeding on the line, the NC State men's soccer team (8-4-3, 2-3-2 ACC) concludes the 2018 regular season at Clemson Saturday evening. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 pm from Riggs Field with live video coverage provided by ACC Network Extra.
NC State enters the match unranked in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll, but the Wolfpack is ranked 14th by Soccer America and 24th by TopDrawerSoccer.
A WIN ON SATURDAY WOULD...
-Be the 518th win in program history (517-445-95).
-Be the 179th win in HC George Kiefer's career (178-96-58).
-Be Kiefer's 17th win at NC State (16-10-7).
-Mark NC State's first nine-win season since 2012.
-Guarantee NC State hosts an Oct. 31 ACC Tournament match.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS (6-8-1, 1-6-0)
-Earned first ACC win of the season Tuesday evening (3-2 vs. No. 20 Syracuse).
-Team is 4-3-0 at home this season.
-Scoring 1.33 goals per match and allowing 1.53.
-No. 11 Adrian Nunez leads the team with six goals and 27 shots.
SERIES HISTORY (NC State trails 15-37-7)
-Last meeting: 1-0 Wolfpack win over No. 3 Clemson in Raleigh on Sept. 8, 2017.
-Last win at Clemson came in 2008. The Tigers have beaten NC State four straight times in SC.
SOCCER SUPPORT IN RALEIGH
A stadium-record 3,229 fans witnessed NC State's 1-0 win over No. 1 UNC-CH. The Wolfpack has enjoyed strong crowds in Raleigh all season, averaging 1,272 fans per match (ranking 20th in the nation) while earning a 6-0-3 record at home.
POSSIBLE POSTSEASON IN RALEIGH
On Nov. 1, 2017, NC State hosted a first round ACC Tournament match in Raleigh for the first time in program history. If the Wolfpack wins at Clemson on Saturday, NC State will host the first round of the tournament again on Oct. 31, 2018.
WOLFPACK AGAINST RANKED OPPONENTS
2017-2018 seasons: 5-6-3
2009-2016 seasons: 7-30-7
SEEKING CONSECUTIVE NCAA TOURNAMENTS
The Wolfpack's appearance in the 2017 NCAA Tournament was the program's first since 2009. If NC State were to qualify for the 2018 NCAA Tournament, it would mark the first time the program qualified for back-to-back postseasons since the 1991 and 1992 seasons.
SET PIECE SWEENEY
Playing in a defensive midfield role does not often lead to many scoring opportunities, so sophomore Brad Sweeney is making his count. The Birmingham, England, native has scored three goals on set pieces this season: Aug. 24 vs. USC Upstate, Sept. 25 at Pittsburgh, and Oct. 20 against No. 24 Syracuse. He has five shots on target this season, three of which are goals.
