2019 World University Games USA Roster
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.– Six from the NC State men's and women's swimming teams have been selected to USA Swimming's roster for the upcoming 2019 World University Games, as announced Wednesday.
Current Wolfpack swimmers Elise Haan, Ky-lee Perry, Justin Ress, Makayla Sargent and Coleman Stewart and NC State alumna Hannah Moore will make up part of a 52-member squad of swimmers that will represent the United States at next summer's event in Naples, Italy. The seven-day swimming competition is scheduled to run from July 4-10, 2019.
NC State's six team members are the most between combined programs out of the 17 schools that are represented on the roster, highlighted by 2018-19 USA Swimming National Team members Haan, Moore and Ress. The four Wolfpack women on the roster are the most by any of the collegiate women's programs that are represented.
Ress picked up two podium finishes at the 2018 Phillips 66 National Championships in July as he placed second in the 50-meter backstroke and third in the 100-meter backstroke to take home two individual medals from the national meet. His performances earned him the opportunity to represent the United States at the 2018 Pan Pacific Championships in August.
Haan and Moore also saw solid summers of competition on the national level. Haan placed in the top six in both the 50 and 100-meter backstroke events at the Phillips 66 National Championships, finishing on the podium as a bronze medalist in the former. Moore followed an impressive open water campaign with a fifth-place finish in the 1,500-meter freestyle at the national meet this summer.
Perry, Sargent and Stewart earn spots on the World University Games roster in the midst of successful starts to the 2018-19 collegiate season.
Stewart is set to represent the United States in the butterfly events after taking first place in the B final of the 100-meter butterfly at the Phillips 66 National Championships. Coming off of a first-place performance in the B final of the 100-yard butterfly at the 2018 NCAA Championships, Stewart's time in the event currently ranks No. 1 in the nation across all college swimmers who have competed this season.
After joining the Wolfpack this summer, Sargent qualified for the A final in the 400-meter individual medley at the Phillips 66 National Championships. She set the team record in the event in both the preliminaries and the finals on the way to placing sixth overall.
Perry also found success at the national meet this summer, swimming back-to-back lifetime bests in the 50-meter freestyle to place second in the B final. The Wolfpack junior opened her 2018-19 regular season with two first-place finishes, including the nation's fourth-fastest collegiate 50-yard freestyle time.
